Comparisons between McCandless v. Ruess In contempt of the love towards freedom and ambition towards achieving their dreams Christopher Mccandless and Everett Ruess both were pilgrims of their fascinations and aspirations; both young artistic men seeking isolation from the critical society they were part of. In contrary to McCandless, Reuss did in fact write letters to a friend named Chris. The two stories tragically ended in their demise, but both young men enjoyed their last moments living their dreams. McCandless and Reuss both were youthful men around their twenties who were academically proficient with bright futures ahead of them. Although Reuss enjoyed the more creative side of education like: modeling clay, sketching, and woodcarving, McCandless graduated from Emory University in 1990 with a double major in history and anthropology. Both stories shared similarities, through the inheriting of new names and their enjoyment of being around other people, but not for very long. Gallien noted that the young man packed lightly, which raised his concerns, a foreshadowing of McCandless death which was the result of starvation. In contrary to Reuss who packed two carrier donkeys with him before he undertook his adventure into the Utah desert. While the exact equipment Ruess used isn’t known, we do know oppose to Everett, that McCandless did back a ten pound bag of rice along with a twenty two caliber hunting
