Johnny and Dally: Characters with Similar Problems yet Different Personalities
How can two characters be so similar yet so different at the same time? The two characters, Johnny and Dally, from the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton have many similarities and many vast differences. Johnny and Dally are similar because they both have abusive parents and both do not have value in life. For instance, Dally never sugar coats anything and Johnny, is sympathetic and tries to care as much as possible. After the rumble Pony was hurt badly and Dally was very upset with him and Johnny for jumping into the church. He then proceeds to tell Pony, “‘ . . . you get tough like me and you don’t get hurt’”(147). Instead of being compassionate Dally told Pony to get tough and not care about others. On the other hand, Johnny cares for Pony and does not want him to be like any other greaser. While on his deathbed Johnny tells Pony, “‘ Stay gold, Ponyboy’”(148). Johnny wants Pony to never get tired of life to treat every experience like a new one. Unlike Dally, Johnny wants Ponyboy to care. Clearly, the advice that Dallas and Johnny give to Ponyboy, makes it obvious that they have different personalities and values. In S.E.
