The Greek god Eros is viewed very highly by many as he is responsible for love, lust, and fate. He illuminates the idea of love that we all look for. One’s attitude towards Eros often might reflect his or her attitude towards the idea of love itself. Robert Bridges and Anne Stevenson both have different opinions on Eros, as well as some similar characterizations and ideas on the god of love. The two poets depict their different concepts of Eros using similar techniques, such as diction, point of view, imagery, and rhetorical questions.…
In my sophomore year of high school, I was in a play called Greek Mythology Olympiaganza. I made new friends because of this event that I feel I will have for the rest of my life. During this event I learned how to control my actions and feelings while performing. I have wanted to major in acting and to perform in more plays since this moment happened. This event in my life is crucial to me because, it made me realize that I can and want to make people laugh.…
He starts off by saying that in order to understand love, we need to understand the true nature of mankind and the struggles that we have been through. First, he says that there were three genders: males, females, and androgyne (male and female). These all had duplicate everything. The males were the son of Father Helios, the females were daughters of Mother Earth and the androgynes were children of the Moon. The once tried to attack Zeus and Zeus knew he had to punish them, but did not know how because he did not want to let them off or kill off the entire population.…
Love can be written about and described in many different ways. The ancient Greek poet Sappho wrote multiple pieces of work which each tell a different story about love and adoration. A lot of the poems written by Sappho remain incomplete and although this may be a barrier for some, it acted as a motivation for me to infer what words could be missing. There were some beautiful passages written by Sappho but some were difficult to interpret. For example, poem 104a was the most difficult poem I have ever read.…

The freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi declared that, “Where there is love there is life.” People throughout centuries have wrote about love and it is the topic of the majority of songs, books and movies. In “Eros” Robert Bridges questions the thoughts of an attractive Eros, the master matchmaker, also known as Cupid. Throughout many Greek myths whether it is The Quest of the Golden Fleece or the heroic story of Theseus, love is a major player in the events that unfolds. Medea’s love for Jason and Ariadne’s love for Theseus had both played a big role in the success of each hero’s respective missions. The role of love may be important but the pursuit of love is just as important because it affects the characters emotionally and physically as well as lead to unanticipated events. In one particular myth, a huntress named Daphne is being urged by her father to marry but she refuses any man that tries to woo her.…
Although earthly love can be sacrificial, it is very rare. While reading Midsummer Night’s Dream, some learned that two characters stand out, one showing sacrificial love, and the other shows non sacrificial and selfish love. In Shakespeare’s writings of Midsummer Night’s Dream, it is clear that Hermia shows more of the biblical qualities of sacrificial love than Lysander does. There are many qualities of love stated in the bible, but one that stands out, and is related to Midsummer Night’s Dream, is the quality of sacrificial love. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (ESV, John 3:16).…
Symposium often speaks of the courage found in lovers that no one else possesses without the interference of eros: "...no one is so base that true Love could not inspire him with courage, and make him brave as if he'd been born a hero... This is really Love's gift to every lover." 14 This passage also makes the distinction between the aforementioned common and Heavenly love, distinguishing its perfection by capitalizing the word. This implies that if the love one harbors is not Heavenly, it will not bestow this gift.…
“I will pursue Hector who has slain him whom I loved so dearly” (Homer). Were these the words of a heartbroken wife? Or a mistress? No, these were the words of Achilles, the protagonist of the Iliad and the hero of the Trojan War. Achilles is one of the oldest and well-known characters of all time.…
( Theseus in the story had realized by the end that not even he could overcome the power that love presented. In it’s own cruel way, love demonstrates itself as a powerful force over humanity to Theseus after he understands the knights’ willingness to sacrifice. Chaucer purposefully constructed the tale this way by showcasing both the wrongs and rights of handling love. He had showed the definition of love in his work, even if society may not have seen it as true love. Love and only love can overcome everything and it is evident in all of…
