The Truth Behind Reality
How do humans determine what reality is? In the novel Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury and the film The Truman show, directed by Peter Weir, the similarities and differences between the two are very much in the spotlight. Both Montag and Truman experience the fakeness of what they think reality is supposed to be like, until they are shown wrong. Both are characters of a warped society, but they experience everything a little differently. Through the novel and the movie, we see how a society of people lose touch with their humanity while becoming victim’s propaganda. Guy Montag and Truman have both been kept in the dark, keeping them from the truth and reality of their …show more content…
Truman is a happy and humble person, who lives in a pleasant town called Seahaven. Everything in Truman’s life is normal until he starts to suspect that there is something that is strange going on and slowly he begins to discover the truth. Ever since he was born, he was filmed since day one for a live television show that was broadcasted 24 hours a day. Sadly, everyone he knows are all just made up characters made to create Truman’s life. He doesn’t know that any of this is going on because it is all he has ever known. Truman discovers a girl by the name of Lauren. They were in College when he spotted her and he had to get to meet her, but without Truman knowing, the show tried doing everything that they could so that Truman wouldn’t fall for her. He finally gets a chance to go on date with her and before the show stops them, Lauren tells him “My real name isn’t Lauren, its Sylvia. Everyone knows everything you do and they’re all pretending” (The Truman Show). She gets pulled away by someone claiming to be her “father” and Truman never sees her again. This makes Truman really start to question what she means and he starts to have his eye out for things. He starts to realize the mistakes that the producers make and he overhears them saying “…west on Stewart…he’s making a right on Holden…” (The Truman Show). Truman was listening to the radio broadcast that morning and he noticed that …show more content…
Both characters experienced their own reality. For Montag, he was born into a futuristic society where streaming was easier than sitting down and reading a book. He soon becomes seemingly curious when he meets a girl that alters his life. Truman’s world was a world made up for Truman so that he could live the “perfect” life onset of a T.V. show broadcasted to millions. The difference between the two is that although they both lived in societies where they were kept from living their own lives Truman was living in a world where he is surrounded by people who are all actors, all of their feelings and their relationships with Truman are fake. On the other hand, in Montag’s society the people there are all real, who also live there and exist. Another difference is in Montag’s life he is being controlled by the Government, while Truman is being controlled by a Producer. Not only are there difference’s but there are also many similarities, like Montag Truman also meets a girl that makes him question what kind of world he is living in and they both grow more and more close to finding out the meaning behind things. Truman and Montag both disagreed with the world that they lived in when they had their eyes opened up to reality. Until they both found out the truth about their lives, they were trapped; but truth only sets you free from things. Every
