Should Young Criminals Kill Teen Offenders In Jail As Adults?

After viewing the non-fiction media documentary, Making a Murderer, and listening to the non-fiction media podcast, Serial. I have seen two underage males be sentenced to life in prison for their actions in separate cases involving a death. I believe that it is right to punish teens for what they’ve done. If it’s a major crime like murder or others that have a similar consequence, then the teens should get the same amount of time in jail as adults. When should teen offenders receive life sentences? I think a person should be at least 16 before they can be charged with life without parole, and it also depends on what they’ve done or how important it is. “More than 25% of people serving life without parole after being sentenced as children were convicted of felony murder or accomplice liability, meaning that they’re not primary perpetrators of that crime, and may have not even been present at the time someone was killed.” I think that this shouldn’t happen because the primary person could’ve tricked the minor into doing something and they wouldn’t have known what they were really doing. Yes they should still be punished, but not as severe as life without parole. …show more content…
I don’t think they should since adults most of the time are going to be bigger and stronger. This makes young inmates turn into more like prey when they’re in jail and are in more danger of getting beaten or assaulted. “Congressional findings in the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 found that juveniles were 5 times more likely to be sexually assaulted. Juveniles that are housed in adult facilities are 36 times more likely to commit suicide.”(The Washington Post) These findings should tell people that minors should not be housed with adults anymore, they need to be

I agree with the Supreme Court that a death penalty awarded to someone under the age of 18 is inhumane and cruel, but I strongly believe life in prison for such a crime at age 17 is warranted. My argument is made out of a balance of retribution and the future safety of society. Rehabilitation, if it is still possible, should be a focus for the offender himself. That’s why I think judicial waivers are best in these types of situations. States can use discretionary or mandatory transfers to adult court.…

Children are usually seen as innocent, as they play around with others and are just balls of energy. Often seen as simply kids who have no experience in the outside world until they grow older. However, sometimes a child’s play can go wrong and can affect another’s life. When these incidents happen where a death is involved, it’s often easy for society to look at the offender as a murder who should be in prison for the rest of their life despite what age the offender may be. While juveniles committing heinous crimes should be punished, they should also be given the chance to rejoin society at an appropriate age; therefore juveniles who redeem themselves should be able to get released earlier and be able to put their life together.…

Juveniles should not be sentenced to life without parole for first degree murder. We don’t treat kids as adults in society, so why should we punish them as adults. The document video Lost for Life: 2014 tells us stories of kids who are in the juvenile system for mistakes that they deeply regret. Brian and Torey killed a girl because Brian wanted to be known as something and Torey wanted his fantasy of Scream to come to life.…

One of the reasons juveniles should not receive life sentences without parole is because juvenile brains are not fully developed until adulthood. According to Paul Thompson a USC neurologist researcher, “In terms of cognitive development, as research on the human brain [of juveniles] is far from adulthood” (Thompson). Adults need to understand that juveniles are still juveniles. When juveniles are charged with a heinous crime, like murder, they need to not overlook the fact that a juveniles brain is undeveloped.…

Since adolescents are the easiest to persuade into doing bad things, they are punished harsher than adults. It’s a sort of scare tactic but it’s victimizing all children who have been convicted for a crime. The court system are assigning or giving children harsher penalties due to their age. Adults may receive only one life sentence without parole, where on the other hand a minor may receive up to four life sentences. In the documentary (Children in Prison for Life Sentence)…

Juvenile crime has been an increasing point of debate in recent years. Many people argued whether they should be sentenced as adults or not when convicted of a serious crime, such as murder. Some argue that juveniles deserve to be treated as such despite the crime they have committed, while others believe they are to be treated as adults. This resulted in many juveniles receiving adult sentences like life in prison without parole. Some juveniles commit crimes without a thought of the risks, while some carefully plan out their crimes and get a serious thrill out of it.…

I don’t think juveniles should be placed in adult prison. It causes to many problems for younger kids to be surrounded by negative influences while they are still developing mentally and starting to mature. It causes problems with depression and making them think that some behavior is acceptable in a society outside of the prison when it isn’t. The depression leads to acting out which causes disciplinary actions that are to serve in prison than they would be in a juvenile facility.…

When first imagining a prison, the first image that comes to mind is a big, scary place with solid concrete walls, deadly criminals, rough guards, and poor food. Does that sound like a nice, safe place to help rehabilitate children? Well for 3,500 kids in 2019, that was their life, living in an overcrowded prison with people way older and scarier than them (Espinoza 2). So the question is, should juveniles be housed in adult prisons? The answer is an obvious no because juveniles have resources allowing for rehabilitation that adult prisons don’t have, and, in adult prisons, they are more likely to be sexually, physically, and psychologically abused.…

Adam Liptak’s article, Locked Away Forever? The Supreme Court Is Considering Whether Life Imprisonment For Teens Offenders Constitutes ‘Cruel and Unusual’ Punishment, asserts that in most cases, “juveniles cross the line, and they have to be treated as adults and punished as adults” (Liptak 14). Age does not determine maturity, nor does it determine responsibility. There is no telling whether someone means it or not when they do something they are not supposed to do. When a child commits murder or rape, people say it is no big deal because they are just kids and were not thinking straight.…

How bad does the crime have to be before it becomes life sentence worthy? I think that the juvenile would have to commit a violent crime that was constructed and carried out by themselves or with an accomplice. I think that in order for a life sentence to be a justifiable punishment, there would have to be some sort of proof that the juvenile knew exactly what they were doing. There would also have to be proof that they knew exactly what would happen, and still knowingly and willingly committed the crime.…

There have been many opinions on juveniles being convicted as adults on the crimes they have committed. When it comes to some of these harsh crimes, who could not punish the individual to the fullest? It does not matter how old a person is because everyone knows the difference between right and wrong. If someone is raised differently and believes it is okay to murder another human, than they cannot just change their mindset. An individual that makes and adult decision should have the same consequences.…

It 's safe to presume that politicians are no longer concerned with the wellbeing of juveniles. Politicians merely just want to give juveniles a quick trial to save time and money. They suppose they get rid of the problem, but the truth of the matter is that they make it a great deal worse. Adult prisons give rise to new criminals. As soon as you are placed into a facility like that, you consequentially become a victim unless you associate yourself with a prison gang.…

Juveniles and Life Sentences Do juveniles deserve mandatory life in prison for their crimes or should they have the opportunity to receive a second chance? In 2012, the Supreme Court ruled that mandatory life sentences for any crime are now illegal to give to juveniles meaning that juveniles are no longer allowed to serve mandatory life sentences in prison. This ruling is agreeable because juveniles are not fully developed, and it is unfair for juveniles to serve mandatory life sentences. Juveniles do not deserve life sentences because the teenage brain is not fully developed.…

I believe that those who committed a crime as a teen should be able to have parole. While I can understand the argument that teens who have murdered have stripped others of their life and should therefore be stripped of their own freedom and life, I lean more towards the science behind it all. Teens have highly underdeveloped brains. Their frontal lobes -in charge of decision making - are still growing. Thus, when faced with stressful situations and hormones rushing through the body, they may make atrocious decisions.…
