Should To Kill A Mockingbird Still Be In Schools

The novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, explains a story of racism in America. To create an immersive feel of the time period, there is language portrayed in the book that can make many feel uncomfortable while reading. Although there is offensive language, To Kill a Mockingbird should still be in schools because it teaches that compassion and empathy do not depend on race and education.

As Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman philosopher, once said, "A room without books is like a body without a soul.” Books have the capability to be any person's escape from reality and no book should ever be subjected to the term "banned". Every book has at least one good thing to offer, no matter how great or small. All the reader has to do is give the book a chance and find that one thing. The novel The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, is one such book that should be taught in high school.…

Novel Prejudice: Why To Kill A Mockingbird Was Banned To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Nelle Harper Lee, was published in 1960 and immediately became successful. However, starting in 1977, the book was challenged and even banned from many school districts due to the themes presented by the novel such as profanity, rape, and most importantly, racism (American Literature Association). Challenges and critiques of the novel were common up until the mid 2000s, but To Kill A Mockingbird was banned because of the timeframe it was published in, and the failure of the censor’s part to really understand the message that Harper Lee was trying to convey. Harper Lee claims that this book is not autobiographical, but says there are many similarities between the story and her life. Her father was a lawyer as was Scout, who is the main character of the story. Harper said she was also a tomboy growing up similar to how Scout acts in the novel.…

To Kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee is written to address the horrendous issues of the 1930’s, The Great Depression, the Jim Crow Laws, and segregation. It explores a variety of themes, all of which affect the reader greatly. Its portrayal of white supremacy, injustice, and prejudice is evident in many occurrences during the novel. The way the characters react to these times of hardship, however, defines their real strength stated by Martin Luther King Jr with the quote “the ultimate measure is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”. These significant themes, white supremacy, injustice, and prejudice, are reflected through the characters Scout Finch, Atticus…
