College is a questionable decision for each individual. Two authors, Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill wrote “Should Everyone Go to College?” published in 2013 by the Brookings Institute. They argue the facts about how going to college could be a positive decision for an individual. Sawhill and Owen begin to build their argument with logos appeal using facts, figures, and credible research. Sawhill and Owen effectively persuade students that college is a highly considerable decision by providing detailed graphs and figures describing the estimated higher income and personal advantages with a college degree; however, at the end of the article their attempts subside leaving the ultimate decision up to the students. In their brief, Sawhill and Owen set the stage by stating “there is a significant variation in the return on education. “ (Page 208-209, Para #1) They use the logos appeal to persuade the impending college students by using figures on the greater income one would have if they have a college degree versus a high school diploma. As the brief states “research shows that 23 to 25 year olds with a bachelors’ degree make $12,000 more than high school graduates, but by age 50, the gap has grown to $46,500.” (Page 210-211, Para #3) Therefore, the argument presented within the main point is effective because the rate of return shows having a college degree can increasingly affect the financial outcome of a students’ future.
