Trustworthy People Will Not Be Disrespectful or Impulsive
People should not depend on other people that are impolite and careless on the decisions that they make in their lives. In the short stories “A&P” by John Updike and “My Side of the Matter” by Truman Capote, In “A&P” this 19 year old man named Sammy and he works at the grocery store that’s called A&P and while he was at the cashier checking customers items out he notices three girls come in wearing bikinis and he starts staring out them very intensely. In “A&P” Sammy is checking out the three girls items at the cash register and out of nowhere decides it is a good idea to quit his job so he can get the three girls attention and go hang out with them. In “My Side of the Matter” the husband chooses to marry Marge after only knowing her for four days in person and only couple months later they find out that she is pregnant with his child. Sammy sees the girls are in a rush to get out of the store because they feel embarrassed they are called out wearing bikinis “so [he] says “I quit” to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping they’ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero” (Updike 4). Sammy did this to show the girls that he did not like that his manager was pointing out that they were dressed improperly at the store and thought by quitting in front of Lengel it would show them how awesome he is to stand up to him. This is example showing how sammy is being quick with his decisions and is also being irresponsible by the fact that he choose to quit his job for some girls and he did not think through that now he will not have a job and income either so that is going to make life rough for him. The husband starts out saying that he and his wife “were married in mobile after an acquaintance of only four days. We were married going on three months when Marge ups and gets pregnant” (Capote 189). The husband marries his …show more content…
The way Sammy was calling those older women names shows he does not have respect for them and when the husband thought it was a smart idea to put his hands on his wife to show who was boss provides the backup that they do not know who to treat people properly and people can never really believe in people that can not give people the courtesy they deserve. When Sammy choose to quit his cashier job to get some girls attention and the husband choosing to marry very young and getting his young wife pregnant so this support the fact that they both make way too quick of choices and never think about their ramifications and how it is going to affect them later down the road and by them not thinking through enough people can not rely and trust them because people can see that they do not pay attention to important details and so they could not be telling the full truth when they tell stories. This relates to society when teenagers make the abrupt decision to take drugs and do not think about the long term effects of them and once they start taking them it changes them as a person for example being impolite to people so by them making the choice to take drugs and changing them for the worst then people can not rely on you and believe in the person you

“Don’t judge a book by it's cover” this is a saying I’m sure most people have heard, but how many of us really take it to heart? In the essay “Working at Wendy’s,” written by Joey Franklin, the truth of this statement is really brought to light. Anyone can find a time, just as Franklin did, when he or she felt as though they were being judged unfairly. I know there have been many times in my life where I have felt as though people have made poor presumptions about me, and where I have been guilty of the same offense. Joey Franklin describes his feelings and experiences while working at Wendy’s; I can easily relate his story to my own experiences of allowing others’ views to change the decisions I make, my assumptions of others, and my thoughts regarding myself,…

Hence, the astonishment of the customers when Queenie and the others walk in because they could never be that bold and rebellious and they had never seen anyone act in such a way. The customers are so fearful to be different that they continue with the standards of the time period rather than protesting the inequality of how they are treated. Thus, they continue to follow the standards and keep to themselves like worthy followers. “I bet you could set off dynamite in an A&P and the people would buy and large keep reaching and checking oatmeal off their lists” (Updike 33) Sammy, tired of this dullness and conformity of the customers, becomes extremely judgmental, making his lack of maturity apparent.…

Due to pressures put on by society at this time, Edna feels rejected. Like Edna, "A&P"'s Sammy felt forced to do something because of common thoughts in society. Sammy's boss, Lengel, felt it was not right for the three girls to be distracting his customers in their bathing suits. Sammy had the opposite opinion, because his actions proved so. Sammy explains, "A few house-slaves in pin curlers even looked around after pushing their carts past to make sure what they had seen was correct" (Updike 58).…

Setting And How It Affects People Reading A&P reminded me of growing up in a relatively small town. With all the same feeling of such monotonous in everyday actions. As if following a routine for life, as if scripted how it ought to be.with the norms of the residents of it, nothing ever really changed, and neither did the closed mindedness of people around. the setting of A&P influentially dictates the people within the small beach front community, having a great impact of their own attitudes, behaviors, as well as their decisions and treatment of tourists differences. Growing up in a small town I can relate to how it can influence your attitude towards certain things.…

Symbolism “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, “A&P” by John Updike, and “Miss Brill” by Katherine Mansfield all display symbolism. Authors often use symbolism to add depth and communicate a deeper idea because they want their readers to think about what the symbol presented represents. Symbols are used when representing things such as objects and even people, having an abundance of meanings, the symbol can be clear and easy to understand while sometimes it may have to be explained. In addition, in all three stories the authors give examples and comparisons of symbolism between the objects and the characters. The girls represent a symbolic change for Sammy, the fur represents Miss Brill’s emotional state, and the rose represents…
