Short Story 'Coyote Steals Fire'

Most trickster tales also show a glimpse of the brighter side of a trickster, or the helpful side. For instance, the King in Master Cat, or Puss in Boots says to Marquis de Carabas “It is up to you whether you want to become my son-in-law or not…”. This shows that the cat helped Monsieur Marquis gain the King’s trust enough to allow Marquis to marry his daughter. Another example is in the story Coyote Steals Fire, when the narrator says “They hurried all over the world, bringing fire to every tribe on earth.” Coyote is helpful in the fact that he was able to steal and help bring fire to the tribes of the world. In the short story How Stories Came to Earth the narrator says “And so, child, stories came to earth because of the great cunning

Many years ago, laying out on the trampoline late at night, I remember hearing the coyotes howl and yip in the field bordering my friend’s house. The sound so frightened us that we promptly rushed inside. To children that grew up never truly in the country, only on the edge of town, coyotes seemed so wild. However, as Dan Flores illuminates in his book, Coyote America: A Natural and Supernatural History, that encounter was not an unusual experience at all. In the past century coyotes have spread across all reaches of the United States.…

Trickster God Vs. Trickster Figure The readings help the readers come up with their own conclusions of whether there is a clear distinction or similarity between Hermes, the trickster god and the coyote, the trickster figure. It is clear for the audience to elude that there are more differences between the two figures than there are similarities. Hermes is seen in a lighter sense, more helpful and beneficial towards the gods and humanity itself but the coyote has a darkness to him, he is destructive towards people in his trickster form.…

The short stories, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Fireman’s Wife” by Richard Bausch have resonated with me after reading them this semester. I am able to draw similarities from what I’ve read and associate them with the story. Doing so made what I read capture my full attention and transport me into the story. Also, I discovered and tackled flaws in my own character in the process. I found both of these short stories to have been thought provoking and an interesting read as well.…

An anonymous person once stated, “Good people bring out the good in other people.” Personally, I believe that truer words could never be said. This quote applies to every single aspect of life, because there are always people around us to make it true. And those in “The Outcasts of Poker Flat”, a short narrative by Bret Harte, are no exception to this form of natural law. In fact, the main idea of this exemplum was that even people who have done bad things can still have a little bit of hidden goodness inside of them, especially when they surround themselves with other good people.…

After attending the Ivan Coyote performance yesterday, I have learned a lot more about they ways how speaking and storytelling can convey certain messages. The performance was very powerful and emotional and the way he told the story to the audience made us feel as if we were involved in his life and felt very engaged. Also, before Coyote came on stage Janice Lee opened, and she sang her poems to the audience. problemsThese were about social justice issues and matters that needed to be changed in society. By singing her songs, the people for one become more engaged in the topics.…

Tartuffe is a great example of someone willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want. They are the people who are willing to completely destroy other people's lives so that they can be ahead. Tartuffe is an example of how such greed and ignorance was used against people listening to a sermon in a church. It could be said that Wall Street bankers are a near perfect example of someone possessing those characteristics today. There are many more ways that people have infiltrated our lives and manipulated the truth while we put our full trust into them.…

The end of the novel mirrors the beginning with the narrator, I, and Coyote discussing and beginning to retell the story. The narrator first notices that Coyote is covered in mud and all wet, stating now they have to do it all over again. Following that, the four Indians ask whether Coyote has apologized for rushing through a story, reminding what happened the last time he didn't. Finally, Coyote attempts to tell the creation story, starting with "In the beginning there with was nothing." (King 431)…

This citation relates to the present, due to the Coyote was given simple directions to do and couldn't follow them, furthermore he couldn't keep a simple promise he made to Buffalo, similarly humans today do the same, being they make promises which they are unable to keep or are given a simple task, which they can't accomplish. Even more, Coyote thought he could obtain another cow for his broken promise, and by being unable to comply with Buffalo’s simple directions, similarly in today's society people ask for another chance once they have broken a promise or were unable to complete a task like Coyote. In addition, we sometimes make errors and rely on the person we made the error with to forgive us or give us another chance, as shown in the…

For example, In the tale “How Stories Came to Earth” the spider named Kwaku Anansi said, “The rain has come do you see me standing here with a leaf to cover my head?” “fly inside my empty gourd so that the rain will not beat at your wings”. Consequently, the hornets flew inside the gourd and Anansi captures them. This shows the cleverness of the trickster because he had a strategy to capture the Hornets. In the story “Coyote Steals Fire”, Coyote continually deranged Thunder so that he could not watch what he was up too.…
