In “A Case of Identity,” Mr. James Windibank marries an older woman for her money. However, Mr. Windibank is not satisfied with just her money; he is determined to keep his stepdaughter’s money as well. As long as his stepdaughter, Mary Sutherland, remains unmarried and lives at home he has access to her money. He prevents Miss Sutherland from marrying by pretending to be her lover. In another case, “The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” Helen Stoner comes to Holmes because she feels threatened by her stepfather. Helen’s twin sister suffered a sudden violent death before she was to be married. Helen is now engaged to be married, and has been moved into the room where her twin sister died. The Grand Duke is engaged to marry Princess Clotilde Lothman von Saxe-Meiningen of Scandinavia. Unbeknownst to his fiance, the Duke had an affair with Irene Adler, an American opera singer. He comes to Holmes to ask for help retrieving letters and a photograph of himself and Irene Adler that are currently in her possession. If Irene Adler reveals the photograph and the letters the wedding will be called off and the Duke will be humiliated. Holmes must figure out where Irene Adler has hidden the evidence of the affair and retrieve it before she brings scandal to the Duke and his family. In another case, “The Adventure of the Second Stain,” Lord Bellinger, the Premier of Britain and the Right Honorable Trelawney Hope, the Secretary for European Affairs visit Holmes to report a stolen document. The document is a letter from a foreign potentate, and it must be recovered secretly. The Prime Minister fears that publication of the document will disturb peace in Europe and almost certainly bring England into war.
