Charleston, the Holy City, a shining gem of South Carolina’s past, even though it is one of the most well known cities in The Palmetto State, most do not know the struggles of the first citizens of the historic Charles Town. England's first attempt to colonize the Carolinas took place in 1629 when King Charles I gave a grant to his attorney general, Sir Robert Heath, with the task of establishing a settlement in the area. Heath was asked to settle the land between England’s Virginia colony and Spanish Florida, but his endeavor ended up never starting and he lost the grant. At the time the tools to create an accurate map did not exist. This means that all maps at the time of settling the Carolinas were very inaccurate. This is clearly a problem for those who were traveling to the land. It was also a major problem for those who wanted to navigate the foreign area. Maps of the time showed that the carolinas spanned approximately five miles (Doc A). Today we know that that is not true but back then early settlers believed it because cartographers, or map markers, were trusted. Another disadvantage of the geography was the proximity to water (Doc A). While it can be an advantage with it allowing easy transportation, it was a disadvantage because the close proximity to water allowed for the transportation of waterborne diseases. They were also vulnerable to tropical storms with their settlement being on the coast. This included the terrain and the wildlife that hunted around the settlement. The terrain of the Carolinas is very mountainous and that was a problem for early settlers (Doc B). Now mountains easier to traverse from modern technology, but back then that technology did not exist. While the terrain was a problem a larger problem was the wildlife that were disturbed by the creation of a settlement on their land. According to an Indian trader animals such as panthers wolves, and other beast of prey stalked the land at night (Doc C). This was a major problem for some of the settlers that could not protect themselves. The presence of the wild animals threatened the safety of the citizens of Charles Town, making it difficult to settle. The presence of natural occurrences such as wildlife and terrain did make Charles Town Difficult to Settle another problem was the presence of
