Reflection: Service Learning

I truly like my new experience because I am helping and serving the community of Salinas but I am also contributing and coming up with ideas in how to improve the program for future students. Throught out my journey as a service learner I have learned so much more about myself and I have learned that I am continuing to grow more as a person by being active in the community, serving the students, and becoming a critical thinker offering some of my ideas and coming up with a way in how to attract and motivate more students to participate in the program. In light of this learning I know that if more students participate in the program they will succeed in school and will gain more confidence and motivation. The motivation and confidence that they will achieve in ten weeks will truly help them succeed in the future. I think that what El Jardin Pilot Homework Program is doing, is something truly amazing because the staff members participating are donating their time and providing support to the students of their farm working workers and I feel honored of being part of an experiment and a program that I am sure that slowly it will grow and succeed. …show more content…
We have been focusing on the topic of gender and sexuality which has been a pretty interesting topic to learn about. From my service site and working with elementary students I have noticed that many students hold a barrier between girls and boys. Most of the children who are in the program are between the ages of 7 all the way to 14. However, I have noticed that the girls feel more comfortable talking to the female volunteers and the boys feel more comfortable talking to the male volunteers. The cycle of socialization emphasizes that we are born into a set of social identities and we are trained to practice actions that show us “how to be”. Most of our social identities come from our culture that shapes us who we are and the values and beliefs of our parents that demonstrate to us how we are suppose to act. I can observe that most of the students come from a Hispanic background and in the Hispanic community it is often believed that one must not trust a person from the opposite gender. At my service site, I noticed that girls feel uncomfortable working with tutors that are males. They often do not look at the tutor or do not make a conversation. I also noticed that the boys do not talk to female tutors. I experienced this when I tried to talk about basketball with my student and he did not want to answer my question. In regards to sexuality, I have learned that the girls dress in pink and act polite and the boys act strong and often more energetic. Usually, the girls just sit, stay on task and complete their homework, but the boys run around and often do not want to finish their …show more content…

I honestly did not know if he was religious or not, but my gut told me he was going to be a great interview. Both experiences have affected me because it has changed the way I see the world around me and given me new insight on what is going on in my own community. I thought I had a pretty good knowledge of the issues occurring around me, but after going to these events and listening to the class lecture, I have found there is a lot for me to learn from to have a greater understanding of what is going on around me. Because of this Service-L Learning course, I learned I need to be open-minded about the impact individuals, such as myself, have on the community, so I can better help the individuals in my community. This experience was different than what I expected because I expected to be volunteering at one certain area for the whole 20 hours. I did not expect to take part of what the community events, but I am glad I did because it has opened…

Teaching is not only sharing knowledge and providing guidance for people to understand, it is also about learning. I’ve had prior teaching opportunities and have done a number of work-related, in-service education sessions in my place of employment, most considered informal. Presenting and teaching to an unfamiliar audience in the community, however, it’s a whole different experience. It’s an experience where I learned a great deal. This paper will discuss the overall teaching experience including; topic selected, the rationale and how it was presented, the learning theory applied and what materials were used during the session and the audience’s evaluation, as well as my personal evaluation of this valuable experience.…

The James Bond series focuses on a fictional British Secret Service agent created in 1953 by writer Ian Fleming; who featured him in twelve novels and two short-story collections. Ian Fleming once stated, “I don't regard James Bond precisely as a hero, but at least he does get on and do his duty, in an extremely corny way.” In the nearly 50 years since he first appeared on the big screen, James Bond’s character has evolved through the actor portraying him.…

After observing the amount of litter, trash, and dead trees across my local park during my service-learning project, my insight about pollution and the cutting down of trees increased and lead me to have more empathy about the issue I was researching. For my service-learning project I participated in “Clark Park Cleanup”, the purpose of which was to assist in cleaning up Clark Park, planting trees, and promoting the importance of trees and clean parks for our environment. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue. Three words that best describe my service-learning experience would be enlightening, appreciative, inspirational.…

Because service learning classes offer hands on experience, they allow students to see if a certain career would be a good fit for them. Not only did these classes offer Young hands-on experience, but they also introduced her to a new style of learning. “It made me kind of disappointed going to other classes because I felt like sometimes I would be just memorizing things out of a textbook and that I could be using my education for so many other things,” said Young, “or that I felt like I was learning more in service learning than I was just sitting in a lecture.” Besides the experience, connections made with instructors and other peers help students feel like they are a significant part of a larger community.…
