After her brother Eteocles is killed by her brother Polyneices, Antigone is heartbroken. She learns the succeeding king, Creon, demands that it becomes illegal to bury Polyneices, due to his treason. The entire story, shows the capability of a women when dedicated to the task at hand, despite common belief of women being lacking in mental and physical strength. If Antigone where to believe her sister when she stressed how insignificant women where in comparison to men, and allowed herself to be oppressed by the over-authority of a man, her brothers soul would remain unrested. Through her plight cost Antigone her life, that was the price she was willing to pay for her brother’s justice.
I chose Antigone to be the focus of my research, because we both value the same things: family and gender equality. Though our values differ internally, for example, Antigone may claim feminism, whereas I practice womanism, they strive for same form of equality. She never gave into the authority of men. She had self-taught morals, that she established to speak out against what was wrong or biased. Even after death, she was dedicated to the equity of her brother, pushing past any obstacle that attempted to stop her. Her gender, age, Ismene’s rejection, going against the King’s decree are just few of the obstacles Antigone faces. Through this Antigone, stayed true to her beliefs.
Antigone’s green eyes represent peace. The Greek’s associate green with health, nature, and vitality which overall are the factors of peace and serenity. Antigone used a peaceful form of rebellion to accomplish what she felt was right. “ So, do as you like, whatever suits you best- I’ll bury him myself. And even if I die in the act, that death will be a glory.” (Line 1144) This line shows her drive, regardless of her sister's refusal she is determined to change the wrongdoing of Creon.
Finally, I used pink to represent the love Antigone had for her brothers and for herself. Though, it might seem as though she cared little for herself due to the that she put up little fight for her life, she help a high respect for herself. She never allowed herself to be oppressed, which I believe is one of the highest form of self-love. If you have the ability to realize your worth, then you have the key to fighting non-systematic oppression within
