On July 22, 1992, former stage actress Amanda Dawn "Mandy" Cornett gave birth to a bouncing babygirl Selena Marie Gomez in Grand Prairie, Texas. She was named after the famous songstress and actress Selena who was shot dead in 1995, just 3 years after Gomez's birth. Her mother, who was adopted, has some Italian lineage while his father is of Mexican descent, both unfortunately divorced when Selena was just five years old and she stayed with her mother. Selena has two half sisters, Gracie Elliot Teefey born to her mother's side and Victoria "Tori" Gomez born to her father's. Reports surfaced that she had a hard time at school and had to earned her high-school diploma by means of homeschooling in May 2010.

The family had financial difficulties during Gomez's childhood. Her mother was just 16 years old when she had Selena, consequently struggled to provide for the pair. On one occasion, Gomez remembered, they had to look for loose change just to get gas for their car and had to regularly walk to their local dollar store to buy spaghetti for dinner. Gomez later on stated that her mother had to work 3 jobs and gave up everything to provide a better life for her. While her parents finished their schooling, her grandparents often took care of her and as a child she grew very close to them.
