That is the precise question I ask myself every day when I get ready to perform my responsibilities as a volunteer for Lincoln Hospital Recovery Center at Segundo Ruiz Belvis. Lincoln Recovery Center is a substance abuse center, which main objective is to help those individuals with drugs and alcohol related issues. Segundo Ruiz Belvis is a Diagnostic and Treatment Center, also located in the South Bronx. Substance abuse is one of the most predominant factors affecting the South Bronx and I want to leave a mark by helping others. That is one of the reasons why I decided to become a volunteer. However, there are numerous difficulties affecting Lincoln Recovery Center, but one stands alone above them all, it lacks leadership.
Upon starting volunteering in December 2014, I soon recognized almost nonexistence governance surrounding Lincoln’s Recovery Center. It is one of the biggest challenges; however, it is not impossible under the right type of leadership. A leader is supposed to set an example, be the head of the pack, needs to adapt to different scenarios whether they are suitable or not. A leader also needs to take initiative and confront issues head on before those concerns get out of hand. One pronounced leader should know how to set goals and expect their workers to follow and achieve them. One needs to understand that if workers are performing poorly, is because one is failing as a front-runner.
