Lily suffered without a mother, not having a mother to teach her about traditional feminine necessities.

I felt her heart like a small throbbing pressure against my chest. Her hands rubbed my back. She didn’t say, ‘come on now, stop your crying, everything is going to be okay’ Which is the automatic thing people say when they want you to shut up she said, “It hurts, I know it does, let it out. Just let it out.” So I did.” (Kidd, Pg.238)
This shows that August cares and loves lily, she didn’t pretend to understand her, she took the time and supported her through it. Also because August tells lily to let it all out, all the pain and doesn’t mind that lily was making her dress all wet with tears.
Additionally, Lily had to find herself through all the guilt and pain she kept bottled up inside. She tried to find herself and find the truth about her mother.
In conclusion, Lily learns how to move on from her mother’s death. Lily knows now more about what really happened to her mother, not just some blurry memory. In the beginning Lily goes through this guilt and depression, didn’t help that her father wasn’t great to her too. Towards the end she learns independence and how to be a strong woman with people who love and support her. August lets her live with them, it seems lily has three mothers to care and look after
