My Reflection On The Dissection Of Sheep Eyeballs

When I try to recall my earliest science experiences, the furthest I can go back is to the second grade. I feel as though I can only recall back to the second grade is because the majority of my early childhood was spent reading children’s books. I learned how to read at a very young age, so instead of focusing my energy on science topics, I poured all of my energy into reading the children’s books and chapter books that were laying around my house. What I remember from the second grade is the dissection of sheep eyeballs—this wasn’t a pleasant experience. I remember feeling nauseous from the smell of the eyeballs and watching my classmates leave the room because they were about to be sick. Even looking back, I don’t remember my teacher being excited about the dissection, but what I do remember is her being very concerned that her students were dropping like flies from the smell of the eyeballs. Ever since the sheep eyeball incident, I’ve been pretty weary about dissections. This seems like a silly reason to fear dissections, but it’s one of those experiences that makes your stomach turn every time you think of it. At the community college, I took a few science courses—Biology, Chemistry, and Meteorology—but it wasn’t until my Meteorology course that I started to enjoy the field of science again. I believe this was around the time that I realized teaching was the right career path for me. When I came to Northern, knowing I felt very passionate about becoming a teacher, my science teachers (even outside the education program) helped to strengthen my enthusiasm about the field of science. Since attending here, I have discovered new teaching techniques that I hope to use in my classroom someday. Science has become exciting again, and I hope to share the positive energy that Northern and past teachers have provided me with to educate my future
