School Where Teachers Are Armed

The classroom door burst open, slamming against the door stopper with a loud bang. All the tiny third grade students turned in their chairs to see who was there. Some students shrieked in fear while others stared in open shock at the door. In the doorway stood a crude looking man who was brandishing a gleaming gun. He was screaming at them to get on the ground or else. He waved the gun around wildly for more effect. The scheme worked. Children whimpered in fright as they raised their hands above their heads. Most got on the ground and cried quietly while one lone student and the teacher stayed standing. The student looked at the man defiantly, nose turned up, and placed her hands on her hips. The teacher knew that the gunman would shoot that little girl if she stayed standing like a saint. She had to protect the children, her children, from this crazed gunman. In mere seconds she had slid the pistol from its hiding place in the holster around her thigh. Three shots rang out, one after another. BANG! BANG! BANG! The gunman’s eyes widened in shock then quickly glazed over as he fell to the ground, wounds emitting spurts of blood. The teacher’s smoking gun also fell to the carpeted floor with a light clang. She quivered as warm tears slid down her face. She had just shot a human. Maybe a father. Maybe a brother. Maybe even a husband. But she had also just shot a gunman. Imagine being one of the students or even the teacher in this scenario. It would be traumatizing and shockingly real. The only positive was that the teacher had a gun. But what if she didn’t? Who would of died? Teachers should have the right to bear arms on school property. Harold Freedman, a parent at Harold Highschool, said it himself, “For all we know some crazy guy could come from the highway, waving his gun around all wild!” This quote from the video “The School Where Teachers Are Armed” really makes one think about the possibility of a man coming to shoot up the school. It makes one scared for students and teachers alike. One will never really know what life will throw at them. Another important reason reason that teachers should have guns in school is because one doesn’t know if the shooters will shoot to the death or stop themselves. They might say the teacher will get angry and and use the gun to shoot a student. Or maybe a student will try to wrestle the gun from the teacher, succeed with the task, and immediately turn and shoot the teacher. Mike Blakely, a former student and now parent at the Harold School District, said it loud and clear, “I’m sure if some crazy man came into our school, acting like a patriot, we would… pop a cap in em’, quick, to protect our kids.” Many teachers I know would do the same if it came to it.
