Why do schools implement policies that hurt the ones it affects? School dress codes have been under fire in recent history for good reasons. Female students being “judged” for wearing leggings under their dresses, no matter how cold it is outside. Young boys being framed for the dress codes being as strict as they are. Many parents and students have taken action against these policies by creating petitions that stand up for the rights of students. Some teachers even think that the rules should be more relaxed. The school boards have seen the petitions but will not consider the complaints as substantial evidence that the dress codes do not work. They refuse to see that dress codes actually single out girls, dumb down boys, and “tie” up teachers. Opposing View-Points Instead, board staff argue that dress codes prepare students for business appropriate clothing, helps students learn without distractions, and keeps students from being bullied. “Uniforms, or dress codes, do not restrict freedom of expression. They are neutral” (Merino, 2011). Schools use dress codes to help to eliminate bullying by making the students follow the same rules. What if the dress code did not have the rule to not wear leggings? A pack of mean girls may come up and say, “Hey, is that Jenny wearing those leggings that are two sizes too little? Ha, what a fat cow!” A bully situation such as this could have been avoided with the dress code. Also, the dress codes allow for students to wear what is appropriate for school life. Thus, helping the students to be seen by their deeds. This being said, one may ask, “Who is Maddie? Is she the one that wears a softball sweatshirt to school? She must play for the team.” Dress codes “allow children the right to distinguish themselves by the deeds they’ve done” (Merino, 2011). Without taking away the right of students to self-express through their clothing the school boards keep in place dress codes that help make bullying rare and have less distractions in the classroom. Singling Out Girls Firstly, school dress codes make girls feel isolated, low, and harmed. Girls feel as if they are the only ones sent to the office because they are not in compliance with the dress codes. Many female students wear clothes that are comfortable and professional without the plan to please other people. Young girls are going to school to learn and prepare for the real world. A student in Virginia had to change because her professional attire was too revealing. The school was said to be sexist and then to “force her to wear ‘dress code’ sweatshirt and pants” was out of line (Schrobsdorff 2015). How are girls supposed to draw the line for professional clothing? Which would a bank rather its employees wear? The business would opt with the dress and leggings. Adolescent girls should not have to dress according to what boys cannot handle. For one reason simply, that automatically gives boys more dominance over girls. “When teachers punish girls for wearing clothes deemed ‘too distracting’ for boys to handle, it teaches a damaging lesson” (Bates 2015). Himself and a woman in the bed together. It is teaching kids that boys are programmed to objectify and harass girls. As teenagers the policy is preparing women to not dress too sexually because it will “turn on” the guys to the point of not being able to handle themselves; which will lead to sexual harassment. This is not the case in many harassment cases. The reason for sexual harassment is poor decisions and morals of the perpetrators. “The problem is often compounded by a lack of any attempt to discipline boys for harassing behavior, which drives home the message that it is the victim’s responsibility to prevent.” (Schrobsdorff 2015) Often times defense lawyers make it out that the reason the boy came onto the girl was because of what she wore at the time. Sadly, the courts get away with doing this and so that allows the schools to do the same reasoning. Truly, it is an offense to make boys, or anybody so easily distracted and “pulled” into that situation by a certain
