I grew up on the stories of my grandfather. He taught me the rich mythology of China and I could never get enough. By middle school, I read the myths and legends of every culture from Amazonian to Zoroastrian. And by high school, my interest in the stories of the world became an interest in the history of the world. What is history if not the story of humanity? What is history if not the story of us?

I matured under the guidance of my environmental science teacher. He showed me the innumerable problems that our world is facing, and taught me how to look for solutions. From that moment on, I found my drive. My passion is to understand the world, my goal is to change it.

I began the moment I graduated high school. If I wanted to change the world, I would first have to see it. In the summer before Berkeley, I

But never China. For all the experience that I have, for all the knowledge that I gained, I know the least about the country of my birth. To understand and to change the world, I must understand China.

I know that the Schwartzman Scholars program will be pivotal to my goal because of its design. The curriculum of the program, an in depth study of China in a global context, matches my needs. The thought behind the program, that China's rise poses significant opportunities, mirror mine. And the ambition of the program, to develop understanding and to create lasting change, is the same as my own.

I am confident that I will embody the mission of the Schwartzman Scholars. I will live it.

I will continue to understand the word after completing the Schwartzman program. And I aim to do so through Rhodes Scholarship to study the rise of Africa and the rise of the Internet in society. In the long term, I will use the knowledge that I have gathered, and the skills that I have gained to create a legacy.

I will change the world for the better. I will make

1st Draft Scholarship Essay I’m a farm boy stuck in the city, Kansas City, Kansas to be more specific. I was born here, but I was raised on my father’s ranch in Tuxcueca, Jalisco, Mexico. I always wondered why I felt out of place here in the United States, it’s a big change from the smell of green fields to exhaust fumes. I’m used to delivering calves and planting corn, riding a horse through the fields, rather than being struck in traffic on my phone.…

Establishing Communism in China: Mao Zedong 's Take on Communism Mao Zedong was born at the end of the Qing Dynasty (Spence, 1999). This meant that he grew up in a generation that desperately sought out change, revolution, and redemption from its oppression by foreign forces, including the Japanese, the Germans, and the British. As a part of this generation, Mao Zedong felt that he did not belong to the past, as traditional ways were failing to meet the needs of the Chinese people in the modern era and they were making China the puppet and toy of many foreign nations (Spence, 1999). It is these feelings of detachment from his ancestry and embitterment about foreign occupation that led Mao Zedong to rebel against the norm and to push for the…

What determines an individual 's deservingness to be labeled as a Communist? Is it his or her actions, status, education, mindset, or something entirely different? According to Liu Shaoqi, Chinese Communist Party theoretician and Mao Zedong 's successor as the head of state, it is not a singular aspect of an individual 's life that will make them a true Communist, but a combination of them all. In his 1939 speech, How To Be a Good Communist, Liu outlines the main actions, practices, and lifestyle choices that need to be exacted in order to create a good party member. In addition, Liu compares the ideologies and theories of Marxism-Leninism to those of past Confucian scholars and authority figures.…

Through my personal experience with the Hanban, and through external research, I intend to outline the pros and cons of Confucius Institutes and show how China’s use of soft power may in fact be beneficial to many nations as it is helping to close the large cultural and economic gaps between many states. The installment of Hanban Confucius Institutes in Universities and secondary schools across the globe is allowing thousands of students to obtain a deeper understanding of the language and culture of one of the world's biggest superpowers, The People’s Republic of China. Many people oppose the instalment of these ‘classrooms’ or ‘institutes’ because it is a clear cut way for the Chinese Communist Party, or the CCP, to inject soft power into nations by seducing the younger generation to explore China, their customs and language, and therefore explore Communism. While the CIs could be considered the use of soft power by the CCP, it is important to realize the many benefits that they can bring to students all over the…

Unfortunately, China is now in a position where it can no longer avoid the fact that its bordering countries are not only gaining power within the country, but are also modernizing their own educational systems, technology, and military. Because China is not up-to-par in any of these national aspects, we as a Chinese people must take any measures necessary to advance our country, and therefore, whosoever should attempt to hinder these measures in any way, is a traitor in my eyes. As a loyal and proud Chinese citizen who is also in favor of all reform that can potentially benefit the development of my country, I am in total favor of the Self-Strengthening Movement, the crusade to modernize China’s education, technology, and political freedom,…

According to Dr. Skip Downing, Creators are people who understand that they oversee an outcome they get in life by choosing behaviors and thoughts that result in the success that they wish to receive. Victims are people who don’t think that they have control. They tend to respond to things rather than creating their own results.…
