For this exercise five web links were given to be used in the identifying and understanding of scholarly and trade publications. To begin, students were provided a downloadable article entitled “What is the difference between scholarly and peer reviewed (refereed) publications?”. This article gave explanation of difference in the two types of information used in scholarly writing. Below, the five sites will be examined according to the reference article to determine the type and possible usage for future papers. The first of these links lead to site titled “Ministry Tools Resource Center”. Upon first exploration, …show more content…
This too is a very good example of specific information for a specific audience. While scrolling though the site, one thing the magazine states is there are “Tested Bible studies” (youthministry.com/group-magazine/about). After going downloading and reading through one of the bi-monthly editions, there are some articles that can been used as scholarly resources. One thing to keep in mind when using this resource is, one has to be very careful in choosing the articles. Following the given resource to determine scholarly or peer review materials, there are some that can be both. One example is the section titled “Missing Parents” by Walt Mueller. In the article he uses research material taken from what one can believe is survey materials by Ken Blackwell. Again using this site must be done care, but while a trade publication there is some materials to be considered …show more content…
This site is not scholarly, is not peer review, and not recommended for use in research purposes. While it does use references to the materials used to write the articles it can fall into the category of sources such as “Wikipedia”. This is to say contributors to the sites material can be anyone on any topic. This is not to say this cannot help in any way. Of the resources listed, there is a potential to find peer reviewed and scholarly articles. The last page to be examined is from http://www.oxfordjournals.org/our_journals/brainj/press_releases/prpaper.pdf. This article is both scholarly and peer review. This article demonstrates a process of comparing and contrasting information, in this case photos. This article also gives all research data collected. The authors of the project disclose all sources not only of the photos, but the funding and institutions used. Also at the bottom of page one, the revision dates, as well as the accepted date. This is a resource to be used in research purposes, as it does meet the criteria for use. Of the five resources given to examine, two can be seen as trade publications, one can be both trade publication and scholarly with close attention to articles being paid, one gives references more reliable sources but is not scholarly, and the last is a prime example of scholarly, peer reviewed, and acceptable to use as a
