A parent arrives with their child who has been Absent due to illness. The parent asks you to administer the child with herbal medication.

The legal concern is that the herbal medication lacks any prescription from a Doctor and therefore lacks information about what the medication is, the dosage, who the medication is for and the expiration date.The ethical concerns are that due to a lack of data concerning the dosage, Educators may potentially give too much or not enough of the medication and not being able to administer the medication goes against the parents wishes.

This breaches Regulation 83 as Medication was not prescribed by a registered practitioner and the label does not bear the child and therefore can not be administered. Identify who you will report to in response to the scenario and how confidentiality will be maintained.
Immediately, the Educator needs to inform the parent that they can not administer herbal medication due to legal reasons and if the parent holds any concerns, the Educator could call over the coordinator to conform the circumstances. In order to keep confidentiality the Educator must discuss the situation in an appropriate manner only discussing the issue on a need to know basis.
