The title of my book directly relates to the plot of the story; both literally and symbolically. The scarlet letter is an “A” that Hester Prynne wears as punishment for her adulterous sin. Hester Prynne, Pearl, and Arthur Dimmesdale are three important characters in the book. Hester is a very strong character, and never lets her difficult situation change who she is. Hester and Pearl are always together, but rarely interact with Arthur. When Hester and Arthur are together they open up about their struggles. Man vs. society and man vs. self are the two most prominent conflicts in the book. Hester isn’t accepted in society because of her adultery, and as a consequence, has no friends. Hester is confident, despite how society treats her, and comes up on top in the end. Arthur struggles with his guilt throughout the book. Not only because he committed adultery, but also because he hasn’t been honest about it, and eventually his own guilt kills him.The scarlet letter is a symbol that represents adultery, sin, skill, and grace.
