Descriptive Essay: The City Of San Francisco

Imagine a seven-by-seven-mile metropolis, surrounded by several neighborhoods filled with homes with unique design in Presidio Heights or Nob Hill, tall office buildings in the Financial District, and amazing views of San Francisco and the Bay from the Golden Gate Bridge or Twin Peaks. As many people view San Francisco as one of the most expensive and difficult cities to live in, I like to think of it as my home away from home. It is a city of seekers and adventurers. I am a city girl and I love everything about what an urban environment can offer me. I got lost within the crowds, found small hidden spots, interacted with others around me and I was able to forget about reality at those times. In the midst of all the stress from school and work, I remind myself of the relaxed atmosphere I felt in San Francisco through the different people I encountered, beautiful sceneries and historic architecture, and delicious wide range of food.

For example, we ran into a girl in a coffee shop. She was an Asian girl, average height, and had short brown hair. She started to talk to us and asked us if we were from the city and told us some nice spots that we could go to for photographs. Since she was a photographer, she knew where the good spots were in the city because my sister and I have gone to San Francisco several times before and I just did not know any new places to go to. Overall, she was extremely nice to us and introduced us to new parts of the city that we didn’t know of in the past because we would just go to the tourist locations that our parents would take us to before. We talked to her for quite a while and got to know one another, then me and my sister went off and explored the different locations that our new friend recommended us to go

Growing up outside of the United States, I always envisioned Los Angeles as the epitome of glamor, fame, and wealth. I believed that once one stepped foot in Beverly Hills, one would immediately attain those three aforementioned virtues. I think so many movies I watched about the city solidified that idea I had about Los Angeles before I moved here. Clueless was one of those movies. The film revolves around a rich girl named Cher, after the iconic singer, from Beverly Hills.…

A range of studies done by the University of Chicago’s American Journal of Sociology have found that living in poor neighborhoods negatively impacts residents— particularly low-income, people of color— due to the lack of high quality housing, jobs, and schools. These individuals are more likely than their counterparts in wealthier neighborhoods to “participate in and be victims of criminal activity, experience teen pregnancy, drop out of high school, and perform poorly in school among a multitude of other negative outcomes” (“Gentrification, Displacement, and the Role”). The Mission District, for decades, had a higher concentration of poverty than the rest of San Francisco, until the dot-com boom in the late 1990’s. Gentrification helps alleviate residents of potentially destroying their lives by providing higher quality services and amenities that will help residents lead successful. With the newfound affluence arriving in the Mission District, fewer people are living in poverty, and the median income nearly mirrors the rest of the city, at about $70,000 (“To Whom Does”?) .…

There are many reasons why my hometown of Carson City, Nevada is unique. The arid desert that reaches across the state and runs into the tall, beautiful terrain of the Sierra Mountains. The snowy mountains covered in trees create the almost hidden oasis of crystal water and black sand, Lake Tahoe. The cattle ranches stretching alongside the freeway through Pleasant Valley to “The Biggest Little City” of Reno.…

Personal statement The year 2004 marked a time in my family’s history in which we took a substantial step forward by coming to the United States. Before that, we lived through and experienced a lot of unspeakable things. Originating in Somalia, my parents understood that it was a place where nothing could be achieved. Civil war broke out, devastating hundreds upon thousands of lives, including several of my family members. Corruption infected the government, military, and all forms of law enforcement.…

I finally saw the the beautiful sun for the first time without having to bend my head back as far as I could since I had been in New York. It shone down brightly, warming my skin and glimmering off the glass of the skyscrapers in the near distance. I could finally feel the soft breeze wrap around me and not get deflected from the buildings. I watched the people from the city enter the park and watched as their city attitudes give way to the magical ambiance of the park. I closed my eyes and took it all in, and I could’ve stayed on top of that rock for…

I once went to a cosplay convention in Washington D.C with my boyfriend at the time and I couldn’t help but take notice of how gorgeous the state’s scenery was. It’s a beautiful place, especially the outskirts of the city. It was a warm august day when we had first arrived, the warm hues of the leaves were vibrant with orange, brown, and reds, the sunset was basking everything in a soft, orange glow, setting a nice, tranquil atmosphere. When we arrived in the inner city of Washington D.C, it was already dark out, the night sky shockingly had a multitude of bright stars, despite all the city lights. I watched mesmerized as we drove by monuments, giant buildings, businesses and fancy hotels.…
