Located in the continent of Asia, Japan is the 62nd largest nation in the world and home to the famous warriors known as Samurai. Samurai were the warriors or soldiers of ancient Japan. Samurai’s main roles in Feudal Japan changed over time. In the 8th century the Japanese government sent warriors to suppress the barbarians in northern Honshu. The government relied heavily on these soldiers and the name Samurai (those who serve) became widely used. Samurai were also hired by wealthy landowners who feared for their safety. In exchange for their services the samurai were offered land and rights.
