Salsa is a popular dance form that originated in New York with major influences from Latin America, mainly Cuba and Puerto Rico. Salsa movements have come from Cuban Son, Cha cha cha, Mambo and other dance forms. Salsa as a dance and as music was created in the mid-1970s in New York. Over the past few years salsa has become a popular dance form in the world especially in Latin America. Some places where salsa is extremely popular are Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, the United States (especially New York and Miami where there are a lot of Puerto Ricans and Cubans) and Venezuela.
Salsa is generally a partner dance form that matches to salsa music. In some forms, it can also be a solo performance. Salsa is danced on music with a repeated eight-beat pattern that is two bars of four beats. The music generally involves drumming rhythms and is very fast with 180 beats per minute. COSTUME
Females mostly wear high heels while performing but jazz shoe is used by both male and females while practising. Salsa performers wear elegant and sparkling clothes, bright colours, attractive jewellery and dress shirts. The female performers usually wear heels while performing but jazz shoes are worn by both men and women for practice. Women need their costumes to fit perfectly and she should feel comfortable while she is on the dance floor performing.
