Saint Maximilian Kolbe was born on January 8th, 1894, in Poland to Juliusz Kolbe and Maria Dąbrowska . He was an ordinary boy and lived a most ordinary life, until one night that would go on to change his life and its course forever.
"I do not know what will become of you"; Maximilian's mother had said to him one night. In 1910, he was given the religious name Maximilian and was ordained a monk in 1914.
Kolbe continued to move around Europe studying and preaching. During his time in Rome, he witnessed angry protests against the Vatican. Kolbe had a strong devotion to the Virgin Mary and he participated in the Army of Mary. He was motivated to fight for Mary against enemies of the church.

On February 17, 1941, Maximilian was arrested and sent to a concentration camp for hiding Jewish people. In the Auschwitz concentration camp, he was given the tag and identification of #16670. When the Nazi guards selected 10 people to be starved to death, Kolbe volunteered to die in place of a stranger. He accepted his lethal injection without hesitation, completing his testimony of being a martyr. His legacy will always live on and be
