Saint Christina, also known as Christina Mirabilis, is often referred to as Saint Christina the Astonishing. Saint Christina was born in Brusthem, which is near Liege, Belgium, and lived from 1150 to 1224. She is the patron saint of millers, insanity, mental disorders, mental handicaps, mental illness, lunatics, mental health caregivers, mental health professionals, mentally ill people, psychiatrists, and therapists.

Saint Christina was born into a poor family, and was orphaned at age three. Some stories say that she was raised by her two older sisters while some do not specify who she was raised by. At age 21, Christina had an epileptic fit. It was very serious, and she was believed to be dead.

She told the priest that she had actually been dead; that she had gone down to Hell and recognized many friends there, and to Purgatory, where she had seem more friends, and then to Heaven. She said that she had spoken to Jesus, who gave her the choice to either stay with him in Heaven or to return to Earth to suffer in place of the souls in Purgatory.
She returned to Earth without hesitation to suffer for the souls in Purgatory. Christina described being taken first to Purgatory by angel guides. After returning to Earth, her life became very strange. She was observed by Thomas de Cantimpre, who was a Dominican professor of
Theology. He recorded information by interviewing witnesses and by asking close friends and relatives about Christina’s personality. Christina appeared very unusual to others. She once stated that she “could not stand the odor of other people because she could smell the sin in them”. She was very introverted and would do things such as climbing trees, hiding in cupboards, or even levitating to avoid others that “smelled of sin and evil things”. She lived in poverty, sleeping in the road, wearing rags, and begging for food. She ate only what
