Safe Thesis

Before taking Writ 1, I had never spent more than a day figuring out what my thesis should be for class essays. My theses in previous papers were usually very simple and descriptive of the text. Writing a thesis that encompassed the ideas of being SAFE—significant, arguable, focused and evidence-supported—was one of the most important things that I learned throughout these past few weeks. Writ 1 has taught me how to effectively argue my ideas in academic writing by learning how to write a SAFE thesis.
The thesis that I wrote for our first preliminary essay did not include all aspects of a SAFE thesis. The preliminary essay prompt was to describe and analyze the methods Robert P. Moses uses in his book Radical Equations to further his argument.

To answer the prompt of how Bishop’s methods furthered his argument, I wrote this thesis: “This article effectively argues that western mathematics education is political and imposes western culture in developing or colonized countries by discussing the mathematical effects on imperialistic social structures such as trade, administration, and technology” (Eng, 8/6/15, 1). While this thesis does have descriptive elements, it is more arguable than my previous thesis because some people may disagree that the article effectively argues that math imposes western culture. While I did improve on the arguable aspect of SAFE, this thesis is not significant as the readers would still wonder why this is important if it does not relate to …show more content…
The thesis of my main essay was “However, the relationship between mathematics and social justice is not definitive—the intent of the education, the social circumstances surrounding the student, and the way that the students are taught defines how math can be used to either oppress or improve the lives of students” (Eng, 8/21/15, 1). This thesis is significant because the reader will gain a new perspective on mathematics and learn how it has been used for social justice. It is also an arguable statement as some may argue that mathematics education has only been used to improve the world and not destroy it, or vice versa. The relationship between mathematics and social justice is also a topic that is focused enough to argue in this type of academic essay with word count limits. I was also able to use evidence that supported my thesis and sub claims throughout my

A thesis statement includes a claim or the main points that are going to be used in the essay. Some writers put their thesis statements in the beginning of the essay, some put it at the end of the essay, and others put it in the middle of the essay. There is no specific place to put the thesis statement, it is placed wherever the author feels it will have the most impact on the audience. In this essay, Colleen Wenke’s thesis statement is…

To avoid this, Manne uses the trigger warnings to remove such a risk. Therefore, trigger warnings are not the shield that Lukianoff and Haidt make them out to be. Instead, they become an educational tool to make the classroom a safer, more conscientious, and more accessible place for all students to learn, discuss, and grow. Manne’s use of ethos in the article can be explored through her tone, clear purpose, knowledge, and her awareness of her audience.…

To the Members of the Portfolio Committee, When I came to Spelman, I was an English major who lacked confidence in my writing and my intelligence at times. I knew the basics of writing, but not the dynamics. I could write a wonderful essay, but it would lack emotion and true depth. Spelman helped to change my confidence and made me the writer I am today. Reflecting back on my senior year, I was hesitant to become an English major.…

Would you like to graduate with the high-grade point average? Students on every college campus should recognize the rhetorical effectiveness in their writing to earn the highest possible grade point average. Being aware of the intended audience will improve the persuasiveness of any piece of writing. The article, “Why do Doctors Commit Suicide?” written by Sinha (2014), focuses on the rigorous workload inexperienced physicians and the toll it takes on the mental health of doctors. The argument is not rhetorically effective because of the diversity in the intended audiences, which creates conflicts with the effectiveness of ethos, logos, and pathos.…

The thesis statement is – “Legislation needs to be changed to grant political asylum to these refugees to help decrease wasted U.S. law enforcement resources, undocumented residency, black market labor, and in turn give better opportunities to these people while also improving America's international image.” This thesis statement is well-written because it provides a lot of details and specific information that the reader needs to know. Also, it provides a lot of points that support the writer's opinion. However, the topic is not clearly stated in the thesis but the reader can still understand because of the good statements and details that are stated.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

This semester in Ms. Wagner’s accelerated english class I learned many important writing techniques that massively improved my writing, like how to use TIQA format in paragraphs, how to avoid bad habits such as the use of “to be” verbs or the overuse of commas, and how to properly write a thesis statement. One of the first skills I learned this semester is how to organize my paragraphs into TIQA format. TIQA formatting is a way to set up a paragraph to keep it nice and neat. It stands for topic sentence (or transition), intro to quote, quote, and analysis. The best example of my improvement using this technique is one of the first writing pieces I did in English this year, the Book of Sands thematic paragraph.…
