Once the images reached the Middle East controversy sparked, this caused many protests some of which turned violent causing a reported 200 deaths and more injuries. A popular satirical weekly magazine that goes by the name of Charlie Hebdo has continually sparks controversy with their pokes at religious and political sacred cows. This magazine published similar images and caused more controversy, leading to lawsuits and was tried for charges of inciting hate but not found guilty. In 2015 two gunmen attacked the offices of Charlie Hebdo killing 12 and injuring 11. This attack did not help the concerns of the muslim attackers but instead brought notice to Charlie Hebdo, their next magazine print ran near 8 million copies in six languages when they usually run near 60,000 in only French. If you disagree with a person’s opinion instead of resorting to violence listen to their perspective and discuss each other’s thoughts
There should not be any sacred cows in society, it is what limits discussion and opinion. It shouldn’t cause social outcry when someone has a different opinion than you or touches a “sensitive” subject. But a subject that is considered a “sacred cow” shouldn’t be criticized if there isn’t a point behind the criticism.
