Capstone Problem Statement: Vehicles that traipse around college campuses are depositing additional pollution into the air every day. According to the EPA, each of us breathes around 30,000 gallons of air each day. Air pollution in a person’s environment puts them at a higher risk for asthma, mesothelioma, influenza, lung cancer, and other respiratory diseases. As claimed by the World Health Organization, a total of approximately 7 million people died of air pollution in 2012. The rate of asthma is dramatically increasing over the past years and it is allegedly the air pollution. In 2001, 1 in 14 people had asthma. In 2009, the statistics were 1 in 12. Now in 2015, it is approximately 1 in 11.

They state that people with asthma experience more than 100 million days restricted activity, costs for asthma exceed $4 billion, and about 4,000 people die of asthma. They also conclude that lead, mercury, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and ozone-forming nitrogen dioxides are all capable of be in the gas state and are very hazardous to public health.

According to SFGATE, bike riding is definitely one of the best possible solutions to cutting down air pollution and taking good care of your body. As reported by the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, transportation is in the top 3 of emitting the largest amounts of pollutants into the atmosphere and that 80 percent of the carbon monoxide in the atmosphere came from motorized vehicles that operate on gas and diesel. There are also no nonrenewable fuels burned while riding a bike. Vehicles burn millions of barrels of oil each day in the form of gas and diesel.
