Each participant received 30-35 hours of detailed instruction for 4 weeks. The SAT-M scores of every participant improved by an average of 60 points during the first year of study.
Also, a different group gains a total of 73 points in their second year. The students who did not participate in Professor Kaplan’s class had an average gain of only 13 points which is quite low compared to those who took the SAT prep course led by Kaplan.
This research led to a far different conclusion. Professor Kaplan said that: “Even taking into consideration the small sample sizes and the possibility of some self-selection bias, this would seem to provide clear evidence that coaching on the math portion of the SAT’s can be far more effective than the College Board is willing to admit.” More importantly, 12 students received SAT-Math scores that were 70 and more points from the pre-test to post-test. Four of them enhanced their scores by 100 to 120 points. One of them even gained an enormous 160 points.
