Max Fischer is the goal-oriented protagonist in this story, his main goal is to have Rosemary fall in love with him. Throughout Rushmore Max attempts to impress Rosemary though she makes it clear they won’t have a relationship. For example, though he just fought to have Latin removed, once Rosemary tells him that it’s a shame for Latin to no longer be taught, he petitions and has Latin returned to the curriculum. Additionally, Max attempts to build an aquarium on school grounds to impress Rosemary. After trying to build an aquarium on school grounds, Max is expelled from Rushmore Academy and has to attend a public school. Though Max and Herman Blume don’t seem to have much in common, they build an unlikely friendship based on their fascination
