One of the most talkative, debated and augured topics among numerous psychologists and philosophers and in classrooms is the very known nature verses nurture debate. Or heredity verses environment in simpler terms. The nature verses nurture debate is whether if the way you act is based on genetic qualities, heredity, or if the environment you were born into had an effect on your upbringing and personality. Some debate that it’s nature, born good, and other debate nurture, made evil. Aristotle, Rousseau and Darwin, and I all have different opinions on the nature verses nurture debate. That is not entirely correct he leans more towards nature this is because Rousseau believes that we judge based on origin and determining on the environment you are born into that will then effect you and hence your nature. In simple terms it may seem Rousseau is nurture but nature affects the nurture. Rousseau judges man based on where they are from or born into. So lets image two men, one was born in a safe and reliable environment and the other born in a dangerous and unsafe environment. Both men would have different skills and societies. He believes that society corrupts our choices, which like Aristotle they both believe that society is a key aspect. I point this out because in any society that we are in they can play a major role in our choices and that society. Self – preservation is the key to survive, which ties to “survival of the fittest”, which we will address with Darwin. As stated before Aristotle believes that happiness is the highest focus for Rousseau that is not true. Rousseau does believe in happiness but not just happiness, emotions are what are more important.
