Here in Raleigh, North Carolina, you don't hear that much about kidnapping cases. I, Rosaleen Sanders, was the victim of one of those cases. On October 28th, 1979, when I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped by my mother's boyfriend, Oliver Montgomery. When I was six years old, my father died. He was my everything. When I was little, I remembered him taking me to my favorite spot in the woods: a tree house. My dad and I made it when I was a little girl; it has had a special place in my heart ever since. Ever since he passed away, my mother, Susan, and I never had a stable relationship. She became an alcoholic because she couldn't bear the pain from my father's death, leaving me to grow up as an only child. Growing up was very hard for me after my father's death. The night sky was pitching in slowly and I needed to get there before it got dark. As sunset faded into darkness, I began to run. The cold, dull air blew across my face. The sound of my heartbeat was increasing. The sound of autumn leaves crunching on the soles of my feet, getting louder and louder. For some reason, I didn't feel safe. It felt as if something was following me. I felt something on the tips of my shoulders. Through the twists and turns of the complicated trail, I finally made it to the tree house before dark. I quickly climbed the ladder and entered the house. I sat there trying to catch my breath. The floor creaked behind me. Fearful of what was out there, I peeked my head out very cautiously and observed a black figure coming closer to me. That was the last thing I saw until my vision blacked

The three of us, being willed on by the attentive, watching eyes of our peers, went into the house to find a spot to sleep for the night.
