The novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry focuses on a black family named the Logans living in Mississippi in the 1930’s. They have to fight through segregation and the other hardships of being a African American in this time period. The definition of courage (provided by dictionary.com) is “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.”
One of the characters who displayed the courage is Uncle Hammer. Uncle Hammer was trying to be courageous when he heard about Mr. Simms throwing Cassie into the middle of the road. He was going to teach him a lesson, but Mr. Morrison stopped him before he could get into serious trouble. The reason why this is so courageous

This made life hard for the blacks, and if they tried to stand up to the whites they could get seriously injured or killed. So any black protest is courageous back then. Another one of the characters who demonstrated tremendous amounts of courage was Little Man. Little Man was courageous on his first day of school because when he received his book, he didn’t like what it said since it was offensive to black people. So he stood up for what he thought was right and threw the book down and began to stomp on it. This was courageous in the same way Mr. Morrison’s act was.
