Every person has the right to a workplace that is fair and evenhanded and in which he or she is treated with respect and dignity. Working in a shared manner is challenging when environments have staff who engage in unprofessional or disruptive behaviors. A number of steps can be taken to support a healthy workplace and prevent incivility. Healthy workplaces are ones in which leaders and managers lead by example, champion respect, and set the tone and expectation for behaviors essential for fostering a harmonious and collaborative environment. In the nursing world, it is often displayed by nurses who have taken on a leadership role. This role could be one of management on a floor or educator at a university, just to name a couple. Regardless of where the role takes place, the individuals who display the unprofessional behavior is the same. Incivility can cause the quality of care of patient receives to decrease, the cost of care to increase and the overall satisfaction of the patient and the opinion of their care to go down. Add high patient acuity, decreased length of stay and the complexities of patient care and it makes for a work environment that functions in a reactionary manner, instead of proactionary manner. (Cleary, Hunt, Walter & Robertson, 2009) Incivility also hijacks workplace focus. According to a survey of more than 4,500 doctors, nurses and other hospital personnel, 71 percent tied disruptive behavior, such as abusive, condescending or insulting personal conduct, to medical errors, and 27 percent tied such behavior to patient deaths. This training should include how to prevent incivility from happening and what to do if it does. They should insist that leaders and managers lead by example, champion respect, and set the tone and expectations for behaviors essential for fostering a harmonious and collaborative environment. The role of the leader/manager is crucial in developing a positive workplace culture that supports a high level of professionalism and a culture of zero tolerance for incivility.
