September 6, 2016. It was my first day at Rogers High School. My heart pounded as I drove into the parking lot and picked a spot in the very back, making sure not to steal anyone’s regular spot. I tightly gripped my schedule as I slung my backpack over my shoulder. I glanced towards the front door, chewing on the corner of my lip as I made my way over. My eyes darted left and right as I wiped my palms on my jeans, there was no way I could find my first-period class. Finally, my eyes landed on the one person I knew. The bell rang and he showed me to class; Advertising, Design, and New Media.
The summer going into my junior year I made the decision to switch to a different school and begin a graphic design program. A new school and a new program; it was all unknown. At first, this idea was terrifying; I had to start over. This became a huge challenge for me to overcome. Then I realized it was a new beginning and I had the opportunity to learn about graphic design. After a few weeks of the Advertisement, Design, and New Media program, I realized how much I loved it. It became a class I looked forward to, even when I was home. I could not wait to come back and finish one of the many exciting projects we were working on, included the SkillsUSA pin, a bookmark design for relationship abuse, or

My teacher quickly saw my potential, I was put on crucial projects like putting vinyl on signs for a local golf tournament. I was even trusted to learning all about the brand new embroidery machine. I created baseball hat for our Rogers High School team, as well as putting names on cosmos hairdressing aprons, etc. I was assigned putting a quote on the wall in the classroom or fixing the signs for the teacher bathroom. I have found my passion, the thing I look forward to spending the rest of my life doing Soon after, I realized graphic design is something I want to do for the rest of my life and pursue it in

The interview on "The Remarkable Story of the Battle to Integrate Little Rock's Central High School,” was heartbreaking to watch. This interview is the hard to envision that a child had to endure such horrible treatment. There are a couple of things that really disturbed me about how President Dwight D. Eisenhower responded by sending in soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock's Central High School to make sure the 9 students would be able to integrate with the other students. My heart broke when Melba Pattillo Beals explained being 15 years old and having to run for her life because adults, wanted to hang her and they were actually chasing her and her mother. When she said for the first time in her life her mother slapped her…

For my McCandless Project I decided to dress up for a day. Here are some of the things I did in order to complete the look: I curled my hair, I wore heels, a skirt, a collared shirt beneath a sweater, and my glasses, and I wore makeup. When people saw me their initial reaction was almost always a smile whether they knew me or not. Following the smile, they would comment something like, "You look so nice today!"…

It was a normal Tuesday at good ol’ Freeburg Community High School. Our rambunctious lunch group sat around the table to enjoy the lunch of the day, chili. Now you see, I had brought my lunch, but I wasn’t allowing that stop me from enjoying a steaming bowl of chili. My bowl of chili warmed my hands, heart, stomach, my esophagus when it was occasionally too hot, and eventually my lap. Between all of the jokes and laughter I hadn’t noticed that my hands were shaking a tad more than normal; if I had noticed, I would have done the smart thing and set my bowl down rather than hold it.…

In the seventh grade, I faced a large transition in life. The previous year I had experienced middle school for the first time, but I would make that entrance again. I moved from Texas to North Dakota, where seventh grade was the first year of middle school. I took on those same fears and hopes that I had faced before, but in an unfamiliar place where I had no one except for family to give me support. I tried a lot of new things that year, mainly wrestling.…

Maquoketa, upon my initial impression when I moved here in 2012, was a small quiet town and although that is something that I now I know it is also so much more. I was in middle-school when I first came but it was in high school that I truly grew to appreciate the wonderful community. My first year of high school was certainly unnerving, although I had previously attended an elementary and middle school that were more than double its size it still held an allure of suspense over what may soon come.…

There is a certain type of dedication that a 13 year old girl has for a band full of cute boys that she wants to marry. The excitement only builds when the concert is announced, and finalized when a white t-shirt is decorated with the last name of the cutest member written on the back like a jersey. April 11th 2014, the date circled in the Glee Calendar was fast approaching; in fact, the story starts the very afternoon before the concert. Churchill P.E class, the least athletic but surprisingly competitive place, causes the initial hiccup. Ultimate Frisbee does not seem like a deadly game; however, in this case it almost was.…

Two dozen 18 year olds sat inside a warm smelly classroom at Marshall High School. Graduation was a month away and everyone, including the teachers were ready to get out of this hell hole of a school. It was that point of the year where it wasn’t warm enough to turn the AC and not cold enough to have the heat on. Everyone in the building was sweating buckets. Walking down the halls, one could definitely tell who was wearing deodorant and who was not.…
