Roger's Ethnography Analysis

Improved Essays
Before explaining the setting of the interview for the ethnography, I must first introduce my friend Roger, who will be my main participant in this process. Roger and I first met at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg during my first semester and we soon became friends, due to the fact that the both of us loved critiquing movies. Although his major is in Anthropology, he stated that the Big Bang Theory was one of his favorite sitcoms. Despite the series based on the physics and associated sciences, Roger enjoys watching the show, due to the fact that in his major they conduct ethnographies quite often, whether individually or based on the characters in a show. He can decipher the associated socio-cultural aspects easier than most viewers

Each element of ethnographic fieldwork has room to move and change and is specific to that anthropologist and that study. Ethnographic fieldwork is unique in the fact that neutrality of the author isn’t always necessary in the presentation of an anthropologist’s findings but is present in the context of their findings. Incorporating emotions and personal accounts do not necessarily weaken your argument or question the validity of your studies, but instead enhances it. The glory of anthropological methodology is in the diversity it offers in its…

Reading Task Chapter 2: Sociological Research Methods The second chapter of The Real World by Ferris and Stein distinguishes between the different research methods sociologists use and outline their advantages and disadvantages. Although the methods are also outlined in great detail, I feel that the thought of the benefits but especially downsides of the methods is of crucial importance in that chapter. Sociology, although sometimes looked upon more as a humanity than a science (which I personally feel is unjustified), is an academic field that uses the scientific method in order to gather and interpret data. Even though people tend to feel reduced and dehumanized by being labeled as ‘data points’ the study of societies is in many ways similar…

Rena gain firsthand experience with her community palliative care system as the wife of Vietnam War veteran who been diagnosed with terminal cancer associated with Agent Orange exposure. Institutional ethnography is differs from other types of interpretive methodologies in that its intent is to understand how everyday experience is inextricably bound to relations of dominance and subordination (Smith 1995 as cited in Miller, 2005). Miller (2005) sought to understand what made her dismiss most of the palliative care help offered. She later discovered that resistance was primarily from her feeling like the object of problem as she describes it of the professional work by the complex interaction of organizational practices, discourse and practices (Miller, 2005).…

Performing ethnographic fieldwork can be challenging, especially when it comes to building rapport with your subjects. Often times the subjects of the research may feel intimidated, judged or like they won’t be understood when being interviewed. In order to get the best results from their research, fieldworkers need to make sure their subjects feel comfortable in sharing all aspects of their life in regards to what they are studying. Anne Fadiman and Joshua Reno both work to build relationships with the people they study through participant observation to gain trust and get an inside look into their social and cultural worlds.…

On his return the university promised him to publish his work. He fully emerges on the lifestyle of the tribe and after two years the secret was reveal. Mini-Ethnography For my mini-ethnography project, I chose to research the life at the restaurant located down the street from my dormitory building. The primary focus of this ethnography is to compare the norms of the employees when the supervisor is present at the restaurant and when she is absent. As defined by Richard T. Schaefer, the author of, “Sociology: A Brief Introduction,” a norm is “an established standard of behavior maintained by a society.” How does the standard of ethical behavior change when the supervisor is there keeping an eye on all of the employees compared to when she is absent?…
