Since robots are mechanical we can command them to obey us with no concern for their well being which is extremely detrimental to human life because this reinforces the idea that we need to obtain power over things in order to be successful. If we are successful in creating the ideal robot, they will protect and obey humans before themselves, we are essentially creating the legal, high tech replacement for slavery. The fight to abolish slavery in America severely divided and almost destroyed our country. Slavery has already created a society filled with racist oppression that African American’s have been suffering with for generations. We are now attempting to recreate a detrimental concept that has already caused a great deal of harm. American society has created a system where everyone is supposedly equal, but certain people are born with severe disadvantages based on different aspects of their identity. The expectation is, successful people have worked the hardest and those who are unsuccessful are lazy and don’t want or deserve success. The reality is, this expectation is catastrophically false, unsuccessful people are not unsuccessful because they want to be that way, they’re unsuccessful because we set them up for failure. In this country privilege goes to white, middle class, cisgender, heterosexual, able bodied men, the further an individual deviates from these standards the more disadvantage and oppression they will be forced to endure. If we focus on robots instead of human rights and equality, we will be eliminating the potential of developing a future where everyone has the same advantages and disadvantages. When success is truly based off the amount of effort an individual puts in as opposed to their individual identity status, society can begin to improve and restore our collective quality of life.
