Community building is when a community or ‘association’ comes together as one and constructs a better environment where all things benefit. In the passages “Once Upon a Time”by Nadine Gordimer and “Rituals of Memory” by Kimberly M. Blaesser they show the differences and similarities in community building. Both share the experience of different groups developing communities and the interaction. The differences between the two passages is their coexistence.
The first passage, “Once Upon a Time” it claims “…where people from another color are quartered” (Gordiner). Because of how the author describes the quartered group as being “thieves” it is assumed they do not make as much money as those in the suburbs and that somehow made them more likely to steal. This can relate to the idea of social classes. The second passage, “Rituals from Memory,” a woman describes her memories of being a child. She recalls visiting gravesites on Memorial Day where she remembers taking a stroll in the …show more content…
In passage 1, “Once Upon a Time ,” there is different social groups based on wealth, for example the “high class” and “low class”. The lower class is separated from those of higher class and they live on the outside of the suburbs. The lower class is looked down upon by people of higher class. In passage 2, “Rituals of Memory” it describes a time in a small town where seven different cultures of people lived together in the same community without creating a social division or hierarchy. The fact that they all lived together without a struggle proves acceptance, tolerance and mutual respect was a foundational part of the community. It also shows readers that the seven cultures put their differences aside to benefit the community as a whole. In the two passages, they share the same idea that different groups can come
