“Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History,” is a book by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich from which the highly-esteemed quote is derived. From political rebellions to fashion statements, women have been “misbehaving” far longer than Ulrich’s book has been around. Cleopatra’s time was from 69 BC - 30 BC, whereas Beyonce is a woman currently making history. And while Rosa Parks and Marilyn Monroe were making history within the same decade, their passions on how women ought to be seen differed vastly; Rosa Parks wanted to simply be seen as a woman despite her race, while Marilyn Monroe sought to be more than a mere housewife, she wanted to be on the big screens. The Harvard professor describes historical women who were not well-behaved as “women who are…
Moving on is an essential part of life. Everyone is going to move on eventually and forget what there once was. “X. Died for Beauty” by Emily Dickinson, represents that there is a purpose for death, but life should be about living to the fullest.…
What is beauty? In today's society beauty for women is considered to be 5'5 thin but not too thin; long hair, full lips, perfectly groomed eyebrows, and a large chest, etc... In the essay Yellow Woman by Leslie Silko, she remembers how her great-grandmother how she was considered to be beautiful even though she didn't fit into the mold that the "outside world" had for what is beautiful. You jump hearing the crackling of the mike cutting through your corrupted thoughts. “Pretty Hurts”, are the first two words the third contestant sings. Hedgehogs are by far, one of the ugliest sorts of creatures we take home as pets. Much like a rat, yet covered with long hair that makes them look spiked, hedgehogs are a bit more friendly and absolutely fat, often getting stuck on their large backs, flailing their short, stubby legs in every direction. It is no question that these animals are not attractive to look at. On the other hand, when seeing them play, popping their head out of your favorite coffee mug, or cuddled up in the tiniest of blankets, or wearing the holiday hats you dress them in without protest, they seem not very ugly at all, actually quite adorable and cute. Not only in hedgehogs, but in every aspect of life, there is something both beautiful and ugly to be found.…
On September 16 at 7:30 in Williams Hall, I attended She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry, one of the Southern Circuit Films touring this year. This film was mainly about the in depth history of the women’s movement. From failures to successes, this film included profound details of the movement. Mary Dore, the director of this film, did an excellent job compiling copious amount of interviews and footages from the women who initiated the movement.…

The Terrible Beauty of the Forgotten War In The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien’s, use of words to describe his memories of the Vietnam war transform the stories in his novel. O’Brien is able to take images of disturbing horror and turns them into a romanticized vision, that the reader can understand. Because this is a war story, it’s obvious there will be horrible images that O’Brien and his platoon had to experience, but he able to transforms them into beautiful narratives. Throughout the book, Tim O’Brien contradicts his memories of death and gore and transforms them into a beautiful romanticized version of events.…
Television, glamour magazines and the internet are a few of the powerful social forces that influence the impossible body image of perfection. Both men and women strive to gain their self worth and self confidence from mirroring what society brands as beautiful. Consequently the journey to achieve this false sense of beauty leads to erroneous eating disorders, unnecessary medical procedures and other poor choices that puts their life at risk. Beauty is not a direct representation of the inner self. It does not express the qualities of a person or his or her skills. However beauty is given a powerful role. Society has placed a higher importance on physical traits instead of inner qualities, thus many women are overly obsessed with their outward look instead of bettering their inner self. Women are expected to look their best at all times.…
We have no clue who they are on the inside, just how beautiful they are on the outside. Beauty can make your soul feel like it is going to burst out of your body. Having a good personality and a good heart is what makes you beautiful both on the outside, and especially on the inside. Like the movie “Beauty and the Beast”, the beast is very hideous and scary on the outside, but what makes sleeping beauty fall in love is him being so loving and caring towards her. How could someone fall so deeply in love with someone’s inner beauty?…
“We are all born sexual creatures, thank God, but it 's a pity so many people despise and crush this natural gift.” - Marilyn Monroe. Women who are beautiful often attract unwanted jealousy and drama. Take the infamous tale of Snow White that was originally written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in 1812. The story focuses on a Queen who was sewing during midwinter and as she looked out the window, she says “If only I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood in this frame.”…
How We Forget In the words of Christina Ricci, “Any obsession is dangerous.” This can be applied in today’s society, as we seem to have a never-ending list of obsessions. Whatever they may be, these obsessions come in many forms, and are omnipresent in our lives. However, society’s obsession with beauty, social media, and celebrities seem to be the most prominent, and have the most damaging effects on the human race as a whole.…
Don’t you Cringe, my Boy “Good morning James”, Venessa would enthusiastically great me every morning when she passed by my office door. Venessa was something to see. She stood an intimidating 6’9’’ while I was only 5’5’’. I always thought that I could dare this lofty devil; either tiptoe and reach her space (mark you she was worth the trouble) or bring her down(what are cranes for any way?). We used to call tall women devils as we thought they were a deadly devious and scheming lot.…
