An example of pathos used in his letter is when he states, “we are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.” This evidence appeals to the sense of emotion by showing the readers negative emotions such as sadness, (charged language). An example of ethos used in this letter is when he states “But since I feel that you are men in genuine good will and your criticism are sincerely set forth, I would like to answer your statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms.” This evidence appeals to the sense of credibility by showing his understanding that men are an important and credible figure in their community. As clergymen himself, King hopes to gain their understanding. The use of persuasive appeals in his letter shows the emotions and feeling of what most African Americans would have had. Overall, both arguments show that he was enduring to get the feeling of the reader for the Civil Right that they were fighting for. However, the stronger argument would be “ The letter from Birmingham Jail” because he went into more depth of detail and explained what was the reason he was fighting for the rights.
