Rhetoric is the art of persuasion. There are three parts to rhetoric. Logos, ethos, and pathos are the three parts and some of them are more important than the rest. I think that pathos is the most important and I will tell you later why I think. Without all three it will not work as well. If you do not do good people will not be persuaded and that is not the goal. Aristotle used rhetoric very well and he pretty much changed how it was being used at that time. “Wherefore one who divines well in regard to the truth will also be able to divine well in regard to probabilities.” In this quote by Aristotle it uses the ethos element of it, because everyone wants to have high probabilities. It is sometimes repetitive just so it gets the point to stick. Mark Antony used this a lot in his speech. He says “For Brutus is an honorable man,”(Shakespeare.III.ii.81). He says this over and over in his speech. Eventually it starts to make people think that maybe it was the wrong choice to kill an innocent man. Which it was, but the people thought so highly of Brutus, that there morale judgement was out the window. Mark Antony starts to question by using sarcasm kind of. Would a honorable man kill an innocent man. No! he would not unless it was self defense.
Pathos deals with the emotional aspect of rhetoric. I feel that it is the most important because emotions can make most people do anything. Including killing other people even if they used to like them. Mark Antony does this in his speech at Caesar’s funeral. “You all did love him once, not without cause. What cause withholds you then to mourn for him?” (Shakespeare.III.ii.101-102). He made the people realize that they loved Caesar and he loved them. I think that, that triggered the people to kill the conspirators. Making this the key to his speak, because he made the people love Caesar again and they realized that it was wrong to kill
