In Leon Botstein’s article Let Teenagers Try Adulthood, Botstein calls out the issues of modern high school and claims that high school needs to be completely reinvented, offering many ideas as to how schools can better the education and experiences of their students such as having teenagers graduate at sixteen and ending harmful high school culture. In the article written by Julie Beck entitled “When Are You Really an Adult?” she uses a series of true life accounts to attempt to define when a person becomes an adult and what defines adulthood. She begins with the real life example of Henry David Thoreau and catches the attention of the reader by leading them down the path that she is talking about a current day young man. However, when she reveals she is talking of a young man of years past it is obvious that many different generations struggle with the definition and thought of being an adult. Based on the interest inventory test, Shevaun has an interest in books relating to sports, family, friendship and jokes. I decided to use lexile.com to assist me with choosing books based on Shevaun’s interest and instructional reading level. According to the Lexile measures for his grade, Shevaun’s Lexile measure ranges between 360L and 720L. The results from lexile.com also shows that Shevaun can be instructed using the following books that will provide him with the most appropriate challenge to reach optimal level: Overall, the results of the assessments show that Shevaun needs to improve his fluency rate, comprehension skills and the identification of harder suffix bases and roots. Although he currently reads at his grade level, improvement in the above-mentioned areas can yield more positive results in his upcoming third-grade state assessment examination.…
As stated in several articles with research conducted, the average child in America begins school at the age of three. A child may begin to mature at a around 12 years old, unlike Antonio who starts school at the age of seven. Though he started school later than the average child, he matured at a rate that subsequently affected and changed his life. Coming of age by the process of maturing is an important and well addressed topic in the novel Bless Me, Ultima. Jenevieve is responding well to small group instruction for the second half of the year. We are currently working in the Start Up Reading Program which teaches letter discrimination and identification, phonological awareness, short and long vowel sounds as well as consonants and sight word vocabulary.
