The surface of my face was emotionless, as my eyes drifted past my locker outside through the back door.…

Spreading the Gospel, One Sweatshirt at a Time All sorts of clichés and euphemisms exist that tell us every day how small and insignificant a single human being truly is in this incomprehensibly vast world. This knowledge has shaped the perception I’ve held from an impressionable child, until I experienced a chance encounter in the halls of my high school in Virginia. I come from a graduating class of 356 students I was one of only two Latter-day Saints in my entire high school, and now I am just another face in the crowd of countless LDS. However, a single event related directly to my faith has shown me the power that one individual can have in this world.…

I sat there in the hard seat of my desk and waited patiently. The scent of Lysol was overwhelmingly powerful in the room, but I knew by the third week it would be overpowered by the smell of musty children and chalk dust. I could not wait for my new teacher to saunter up to me, eyes full of admiration, and give me my paper. I had worked hard on it for nearly two months during the summer prior to this new school year. Looking around the room at my new classmates, it was easy to tell who had done the summer assignments, especially with their conspicuous faces.…

The Secret Silent Society It all started in fourth grade when I picked up a book; attempted to mold my hands to certain images that I believed to mean ‘S’, shifting to ‘A’, stumbling upon ‘R’, shuffling back to ‘A’, and then floundering to ‘H’ over and over again, till I no longer stumbled, wobbled, or trembled. After flipping the page, I soon found myself infatuated with silent communication and those who use it. Class after class, I learned all the signs in that book and more, but nothing compared to the first deaf event I attended. Walking in the room, witnessing hands fly at rapid paces, attempting to scrutinize a person’s every movement in attempt to comprehend some semblance of a sentence; allowing me to know what’s going on. Suddenly the lights flicker, all movement stops, except for a single person’s hands who stood above the rest.…
