Retinal detachment is a medical emergency that occurs when the thin sensory layer of the eye becomes separated from the rest of the eye. This cause vision changes and blindness if not taken care of properly. Proper nursing care and patient compliance is essential in restoring functioning of the eye and protecting against serious complications. ( Williams, 2011)(WebMD, 2016).
Anatomy and Physiology
The retina in a thin layer of tissue that is covered in nerve cells at the back of the eye. The retina is the tissue that houses the rods and cones that give us vision. It has two areas on it that house the working units of vision, they are called the macula and the fovea centralis. The Fovea is an indention located on the macula and houses only cones that respond to different wavelengths of light giving us sharp color vision. Without the retina and its working parts, we wouldn't have vision. (Williams, 2011).
Pathophysiology and Etiology
Retinal detachment occurs when the retina becomes separated from the tissues that surround it (Williams, 2011). This gives room for fluids to leak in between the layers. The retina cannot function normally in this state and vision will be lost. (Webmd, 2016).
Retinal detachment can be caused by more than one thing. There can be a loss of integrity in the retina, …show more content…
There are some things the nurse must do in order for the patient to remain compliant and comfortable. We need to give pain medication as ordered to reduce acute pain and impaired comfort. The nurse may also need to flush or irrigate the eye, this must be done with strict sterile technique to prevent infection. The patient may need support and the ability to express concerns related to anxiety and knowledge deficit. Education will also be key in promoting compliance of the patient. They will be taught follow up care, when to call the doctor, and prevention methods for complications. (Williams,
