Responsible Citizenship for a Strong America
Youth of the Year
Being an active, responsible citizen is key to a stronger, more competitive America. As United States citizens, we have obligations and responsibilities to uphold so that America functions as it was intended. Responsible citizens should be active participants in the local community and school. Active citizens should stand out to others by the way they act and even spend their money. They realize that although it may be hard and they are only one person, they can still make a difference in other people’s lives. This includes having the heart to serve others, voting in elections, as well as making decisions to better not only today, but future generations. Albert Einstein once said,

Through these organizations I have been able to express my heart for serving. We have given back to the community by hosting a Senior Citizen Luncheon at our school during the Thanksgiving season. I have participated in the luncheon for the past two years and love seeing the smiles on all of my elders in the community because they know their local school cares for them. It was also interesting to see people that I recognized from the previous year and to see people that I personally knew. I have also engaged in the community by cleaning up litter on the main roads and even planting some flowers at local parks. Although none of us got recognition for doing these simple acts, it is important to do good things for the community and not expect anything in …show more content…
Every Sunday I get the opportunity to pour into at least thirty-five, three to four year olds at my church. I play with them and make sure that all of them are having a fun time at church. I am able to teach specifically ten kids every week about Jesus on their own level. I have seen a great amount of life change from when they first entered the room. One child in specific first came a few months ago and was crying every time he came and was very shy because he missed his parents. After talking to him and playing with him continuously for weeks, he began to open up and loved coming to church. Now when he sees someone new he goes up to them and shows them around because he knew how scary the change in environment once was. I am able to invest my time into the next generation of children and hope that one day my ceiling will one day be their floor. Anything that I thought was impossible I know they will be able to reach even if it is not in my

I asked myself the question “how can we make a long-term effect on a short-term mission trip?” This idea centered around the lessons we were teaching the children throughout the day. I noticed that the children we well informed about God and how to become a Christian. Pastor Vernon gives them lessons every week, probably the same lessons we were giving them. The children were hungry for more than a preschool version of the bible.…

I participated in events such as volunteering in local soup kitchens, Spicket River cleanup, earth day and helping to pick up trash around the city of Lawrence. After I saw what a difference I could make by just simply helping my community through the school, I decided to do some community service on my own. Following my trade area I went on to volunteer at Lawrence General Hospital. Throughout my time there, my eyes were opened even more as to what a change one can simply make by dedicating one's time to others.…

In her critical essay, “Environment as Psychopathological Symbolism in ‘The Yellow Wallpaper,’” Loral MacPike argues that Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a study of social degeneration into madness. MacPike supports her claim by first examining the significance of the narrator’s prison room, barred windows, and bedstead, which all symbolize the narrator’s child-like status in society, then MacPike explains that the narrator’s life was normal for American women of the nineteenth century, and finally states that the yellow wallpaper not only represents the narrator’s mind, but alters her perception of the real world. MacPike’s purpose is to expand upon Wellek’s statement that realism is “the objective representation…

Many of the organizations that I am involved in, including FFA, 4-H, and LYO, take part in several service projects throughout the year. As a result, I have been involved in multiple community service activities over the course of my high school career, such as taking a week-long mission trip to Nashville, Tennessee this past summer, or just spending an evening during the holiday season Christmas caroling around town. Although some people aren't always willing to give up their time to help others, I believe that an essential aspect of being a member of a community is being willing and able to devote your time to helping others. It helps you develop positive relationships, and it lets the people you're helping know that there are places they can turn to for support. It helps you build up your responsibility, reliability, and work ethic, and it provides community members with a chance to establish lasting connections with one another.…

Everyday, thousands of high school students immerse themselves in their community and create satisfaction in helping others in need. Community service is a critical aspect of teen development. Without it, students do not realize how much it means to help others, and they do not get the full experience of working with different people. Volunteerism is required in many high schools around the United States, but not all of them. This issue is incredibly controversial because the debate is whether community service actually helps students in the long run.…

Vincent is thirteen years old, Tess is nine, Alex is twenty and Olivia is twenty-three. I invited them all to spend the night at my house the night before.
