I want to learn many things from this class. The top four would have to be learning how to be the best resident assistant I can be, learn more about myself, build on my leadership skills, and gain better communication skills. Once starting at Ball State, being a resident assistant was something I have always wanted to do. After telling my friends and hearing them say they could see me being a resident assistant, is when I knew it was time to take action and work to accomplish this goal. EDHI 200 will only help me grow in this aspect. It is going to teach me many ways to be an effective and helpful resident assistant. After sitting down for lunch with my resident assistant to discuss EDHI 200, I was extremely excited upon hearing I would get to build onto my leadership skills in this class. Throughout high school I kept many leadership position from BETA Club Vice President to section leader of the Forest Park Marching Rangers front ensemble. I knew coming to Ball State University I wanted to continue to build on these skills. I joined Hall Council and SGA in order to do so. EDHI 200 is only going to help advance these skills and I cannot wait. My resident assistant, Kaylee Keesling, also said she learned a lot about herself from this class. Before coming to Ball State, I always said one of the things I was most excited about for college was to discover more about myself. Lastly, becoming a stronger communicator has been something I have been improving on since this past summer. During this summer of 2016, I was the Crew Leader of a bakery in Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari. This process has helped me excel at being a communicator. I feel they do this because they can share their own experiences to make sure we are as prepared as possible to be a resident assistant. The student staff in the class can also provide us with tips and helpful information in order for us to be top notch resident assistants. The thing I found most interesting from the discussion about student staff on January 8th, was how many people in the class thought that the “The RA is a staff member/Office of Housing and Residence Life employee” function was one of the top. Yes, a resident assistant is an employee, but I would never want to look at it as a job because I want it to be something I thoroughly enjoy.
