The colosseum, sometimes known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is a colossal piece of architecture situated in Rome, Italy. This building is Rome's most famous tourist attraction.
This amazing piece of history was built in 72 A.D. It has 80 different entrances and can seat up to 50,000 to 80,000 people. The colosseum was built out of travertine (a form of limestone) and cement on the outside and tufa (another type of limestone) and brick for the interior. The main pedestals were made out of marble. The colosseum was built four stories high. The first 3 stories were full of high arched entrances. The arena inside the building is 287 feet long and 180 feet wide. The colosseum was built to entertain the ancient Roman’s and has been used for many different things throughout the years. One such event that the Colosseum has hosted was the Man vs. Beast games. During these games, it was thought that over 500,000 people lost their lives while over 1 million animals were killed. The wild animals which they kill include lions, tigers, hyenas, hippos, rhinos, crocodiles, ostriches, antelopes bears and zebras. Another way the Romans entertained themselves was that they would flood the ground of the colosseum and host small ship naval battles.
